| Going Underground! 30th September 2004 | |||||||||||||
October the 4th sees the closing date
for submission of tenders to the Santiago del Teide local council, for
plans for the construction of underground parking facilities in Puerto
Santiago in the La Hondura area , from the Post Office to the Balcón
de Los Gigantes Apartments Building. The Car Park is to cover a total
area of 3,953.67 square meters and must provide a minimum of 300 parking
places. Mayor Juan Damián Gorrín Ramos, commented that "with
the construction of these parking places we will try to solve one of the
problems that face the citizens of this coastal area every single day.
The lack of parking has been compounded by the exponential population
increase in the area over recent years, as well as it being a tourist
area. We see this work as being of vital importance to our citizens and
visitors" he said. Residents of the area will certainly welcome this
move, but should not hold their breath., The other public works building
in Puerto Santiago - the protected housing project in Paseo Agustin Hererra
(near the Chicken Shack) has been some 4 years in construction and its
completion date is overdue by 3 months and counting! |

| Masca - an area of cultural and historic interest - Official! Sept 2004 | |||||||||||||
The
pìcturesque hamlet of Masca, which is inside Rural Park of Teno,
has been declared an area of cultural and historic interest. The resolution
was recently passed by the Canarian Government. Masca is one of the most
visited villages in Tenerife and comes second only to the National Park
of Mount Teide in terms of number of visitors per year. The Buena Vista
del Norte local council is currently negotiating with the Island Government
, to set controls in place to limit the number of people accessing the
Masca Barranco in order to avoid any damge or deterioration to the walkway,
and to the beach. If all goes according to plan, controls would be imposed
from 2006 with visitors paying an entry fee.The Cabildo (Island Government)
has already approved at the end of last year plans for the modernisation
and improved sea access at the beach at Masca. The project is estimated to cost 86000 euros and will improve the embarkation facilities for people wishing to return to Los Gigantes by boat after having done the Masca walk . According to a study by the Cabildo some 150 people do the walk every
day, and the largest part of these do NOT walk up again, but return to
Los Gigantes by boat from the existing slipway |

| Parents and Children hold Protest March in Alcala -30th September 2004 | |||||||||||||
| School Bus Axed! | |||||||||||||
A
group of about 200 parents and students from the IES in Alcala took to
the streets, not once but twice, to protest against the cuts by the department
of Education to school bus services, which have resulted in 3rd and 4th
year pupils having to walk to school from as far as Playa San Juan, along
roads that have no public footpaths, and are extremely hazardous. The
marches took place yesterday (Wednesday 29 of September) and today (Thursday
30) along the route between Alcala and Playa San Juan between 7:30 and
the 9 in the morning ,caused traffic tailbacks, that according to the
Guia de Isora Local Police" were more than 5 kilometers in both directions
(Adeje and to Santiago del Teide). The march was accompanied by Civil
Guard and Local Police agents and vehicles, whose brief was to cover the
safety of the group, as well as to control the traffic. On both days the
group of students and parents left the centre of Playa San Juan at 7:30am.
They crossed the main road en masse (blocking the traffic completely)
and walked the 3 kilometers or so along the main road before arriving
at the Secondary Education Institute in Alcala around 8:15 (yesterday)
and 8:45 (today). Along
the route their ranks were swelled by some students and parents from the
village of Fonsalía ( 1.5 km from the school). Chanting : "Ea,
ea, ea, Playa San Juan se cabrea", "Ruano, escucha Playa San
Juan está en la lucha", "Queremos transporte, queremos
transporte". Another protest is scheduled tommorrow morning Friday
1 of October at the same time. Also a group of parents and councilors
the Guia de Isora local council has arranged a meeting at midday at the
Department of Education, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to broach the subject
with those responsible. |

| Don’t drink the water! (Advertising Feature) 21st September | |||||||||||||
Everybody
knows that the water that comes through the taps in Tenerife can’t
hurt you, but it doesn't exactly taste very nice, does it? And in any
case it’s better to be safe than sorry isn’t it? So that’s
why we all spend a lot of time, money and effort transporting those familiar
plastic bottles up to our apartments and villas. The average person uses
more than 2 litres of drinking water a day - oh yes you do! - don’t
forget tea and coffee and even your iron - you don’t want to calc
up your electrical appliances do you? Then there’s the environmental aspect. More and more environmentalists are beginning to question the purpose of lugging those heavy, inefficient, polluting bottles all over the Earth. The parent organization of the World Wildlife Fund, the Switzerland based World Wide Fund for Nature, argues strongly that the distribution of bottled water requires substantially more fuel than delivering tap water, especially since over 22 million tons of the bottled liquid is transferred each year from country to country. Instead of relying on a mostly pre-existing infrastructure of underground pipes and plumbing, delivering bottled water - often from places as far-flung as France and Iceland - burns fossil fuels and results in the release of thousands of tons of harmful emissions. Since some bottled water is also shipped or stored cold, electricity is then expended for refrigeration. The WWF estimates that around 1.5 million tons of plastic are used globally each year in water bottles Most water bottles are made of the oil-derived polyethylene terephthalate, which is known as PET. While PET is less toxic than many plastics, the Berkeley Ecology Center found that manufacturing PET generates toxic emissions-in the form of nickel, ethylbenzene, ethylene oxide and benzene. Then there are the disposal problems, it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to degrade in a land fill. So what can we do? Nobody wants to drink unfiltered tap water, so there’s no alternative to carrying 1,400 kg or 3,000 lbs or 1.5 tons, per average couple, per year, of those full plastic bottles up your stairs and then carting around 1,500 of the empties down again! Well actually there is...Unlike like some other water filtration systems, Aquasana Products are affordable and very cost effective when compared against the cost of bottled water. Plus they have not been designed merely to meet the minimum government or industry standards that allow the "trace levels" of toxic chemicals in tap water and bottled water. We believe‚ and science has proven‚ that there are no safe levels for toxic synthetic chemicals in our water. While it is permitted and accepted that bottled water and tap water commonly contain traces of many unhealthy contaminants‚ Aquasana filtered water does not. It produces truly healthy, chemical free water. We believe that the healthiest water is water as it existed before the influences of modern man‚ water free from chemical contaminants and balanced with traces of the Earth‘s natural minerals. Aquasana systems remove chlorine, synthetic chemicals, heavy metals, turbidity and cysts while leaving in the natural mineral traces. It's like having natural spring water on tap in your home for only 10 euros a month! Aquasana provides solutions for all types of homes. The AQ-4000 Sink-top Model sells for only 99.99 euros inlcuding IGIC. This twin cartridge drinking water filter installs in seconds to standard kitchen taps, ideal for rented accommodation, take it with you when you move! It provides up to 110 litres an hour of ultra-filtered high quality water for drinking, cooking and other beverages. The package includes filter housing‚ chrome tap diverter‚ twin filter cartridge set (lasts 6 months/filters 1,890 litres) and easy to follow instructions. Replacement filters cost 59.95 euros every 6 months /1,890 litres...that's only 10 euros a month for a virtually unlimited supply of "healthy water”. Why
stop at drinking water? Anyone who has ever swam in a chlorinated
pool knows how chlorine robs moisture from skin and hair. What most don't
realize is that typically there is as much or more chlorine in your tap
water as in most pools. The Aquasana 2 Stage Shower Filter installs in seconds and provides naturally healthy, chemical free water for showering. It removes chlorine, reduces harmful VOCs and enhances pH balance for the healthiest most refreshing shower ever and as it retails at only 50.00 euros you can afford to pamper yourself! If you own your own property why not invest in the EQ-300 Whole House Water Filter System. This plumbed-in 4 stage filtration process supplies better than bottled water quality throughout your entire home for only a fraction of a euro per day. With Aquasana products now available in Tenerife, why shouldn’t you drink, shower, bathe... LIVE with pure, healthy water! Ring Pure Water Canaries on 922 862848 for more information. |

Guia de Isora county council decided to close the beach at Playa San Juan to bathers last week after various patches appeared staining the sand and contamination was feared. Samples were taken for testing, and it was stated that these marks were probably caused by algae, brought in by the strong tides, but that the beach would remain closed until definitive results were received. Meanwhile, Ayuntamiento employees have been meticulously cleaning the beach. |

Sad end to a spectacular days racing - A record 146 drivers took part in the 30th edition of the Tamaimo Hill climb yesterday, which came to an abrupt halt when the final leg was suspended due to a lack of ambulance facilities, when an incident occurred before the 3rd and final ascent (there was only one ambulance to cover the entire event!) and insufficient marshals to maintain crowd control. Best times during the first practice leg were taken for calculating results, but there was an air of disappointment all round. Glicerio Rodriguez from La Palma (Mitsubishi Evo I SAW) was second amongst the road style vehicles and first in Group A, while the Gran Canarian Antonio Ortega, with the MG Meter 6R4, was third overall and winner of group T. |
