Monarch Scheduled continues to expand as it launches new direct routes from Manchester Tenerife from 1 November

The airline will operate its daily Tenerife service from 1 November and thrice-weekly Gibraltar flight from 3 November and is the only scheduled carrier to operate these routes non-stop. Fares* start from just £40 one way (or £70 return) to Gibraltar, and £49 one way (or £87 return) to Tenerife and include a full in-flight service including hot food with wine, complimentary bar drinks, daily newspapers, hot towels, in-flight TV and reserved seating.

Jonathan Crick, commercial director, commented: “The Monarch Scheduled programme from Manchester continues to go from strength to strength despite tough competition. We believe that our unique formula of low fares with a full in-flight service is the best value on the market.”

The airline has introduced these routes in response to demand from passengers from the north who have long awaited a service which will allow their customers the flexibility and convenience of a regular scheduled service with no minimum stay restrictions.

Jonathan Crick explains: “Many of our passengers are regular travellers – typically property owners, business travellers and people taking short breaks - and they are looking for low fares with convenience and flexibility. Up until now passengers travelling from the north either had to fly to Gibraltar and Tenerife from a London airport or take a charter flight which normally ties them to a weekly duration. In the case of Gibraltar there were no direct flights at all from the north, so passengers had to fly into Malaga, which is clearly not a convenient option for those bound for any destination on the Costa del Sol south of Marbella.

“In the case of Tenerife, this is a perfect choice for our low fares with frills approach, with a flight time of over four and a half hours, passengers will appreciate our highly acclaimed on-board service.”

Jonathan Crick added: “Passengers have been crying out for us to introduce these routes for a long time, and we are delighted to be able to satisfy their demands.”

John Spooner, managing director of Manchester Airport said: "We are delighted that Monarch Scheduled is launching services to Gibraltar and Tenerife. I'm sure they will inevitably attract passengers who seek flexible holidays to these two popular destinations. This is clearly good news for Manchester Airport."

Next Monday, September 22nd is Car Free Day, and many cities and towns in the Canary Islands will be marking the day in various ways.

The European wide city campaign, known as The City without my Car, will see Tenerife’s capital, Santa Cruz, introduce the system of barriers that has been in planning for a number of years. Small metal barriers will be erected in various zones, and only residents and delivery vehicles will have access to those streets. Initially the scheme will be run on a pilot basis, but it is hoped to introduce it on a long term basis later. The Car Free Day is part of a wider week long European Week of Mobility scheme, which will see parallel events in Santa Cruz, including a Car Versus Person race tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7pm, and on Sunday the city celebrates the XXIV Festival of the Bicycle, starting at 9am from El Corte Inglés and finishing at Las Teresitas beach.

INTERNATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE - Holiday saved heart man's life - September 15 2003

Canarian doctors saved a Scots tourist's life after the NHS repeatedly failed to spot his deadly heart condition.

It took a an attempted theft in Tenerife and a last-minute £36 travel insurance deal to get Brian Parker the care he needed.

Brian, 52, had an angina attack after chasing two thieves who stole partner Nancy's handbag.

Doctors on the island quickly saw that two of his arteries were blocked. And they said he had probably had the problem for 13 YEARS.

Brian needed double heart bypass surgery and six weeks of hospital care. His travel insurers paid the£165,000 bill. He said yesterday: ``It took the Spanish to sort me out. No one in the UK bothered and I want to know why.''

Brian, of Crossgates, Fife, has had regular medical checks since suffering a heart attack in 1990.

But he says that on three trips to the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline last year, doctors didn't give him an angiogram -an X-ray of blood vessels to check for blockages.

He said: ``All they did was put me on a treadmill. As I passed that test, they didn't think it wasworth making any other checks.'' Brian did not get his angiogram until his May trip to Tenerife.

The Canarian doctors found that one of his arteries was totally blocked and another 90 per cent blocked. They ordered an urgent double bypass.

Brian said: ``Both cardiologists who saw me said I'd been a walking timebomb for 13 years since my heart attack.

He had to have the surgery at Tenerife's University Hospital because he was too ill to travel. Insurers AXA paid for his treatment, put Nancy up in a top hotel and flew Brian home in July.

Brian had only bought his travel policy the day before leaving home. He said: ``I can't thank the insurers enough. It's the best £36 I've ever spent.

15 September 2003 - ROMMEL FDEZ. school of football Trophy Presentation

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Escuela de Fútbol Base Rommel Fernández the local municipal school of Football and the event was marked in true style last Saturday at a trophy presentation held at the Municipal football

ground in Puerto Santiago.

The twelve teams represented a wide range of age and ability from the Mini-Prebenjamines youth team right up to the 1st team players. They received their awards in front of fans and dignitaries including the mayor, Juan Damián Gorrín Ramos, and members of the town council including, Oscar Tomás Pérez Rodríguez, head of sports.

The School began in May of 1993 and since that time has been proud to number many champions amongst its ranks, including both regional and national players, as in the case of Airam García who has recently made his 1st team debut for CD Tenerife.

The school was named in memory of the Legendary South American footballer Rommel Fernández from Panama (but whose family had its roots in Tenerife) who died tragically on the 6th May 1993 in a car accident. It's philosophy is simple, to work with children on a daily basis to make them not only better footballers, but better people as well. With the help of people like Gabriel Magdalena who has recently joined the regional team, in order to aid in their attempt at promotion this season and Domingo González together with Ramón Guerra, a veteran of the Football scene in Puerto de Santiago, who have great plans for the Junior team they are sure to achieve their aims

12 September 2003 Cigarette haul seized at airport

Customs officers working a late shift at Cardiff International Airport were checking passengers on arriving flights, they stopped a group of passengers from a My Travel charter flight from Tenerife.

Five men and a woman, mostly from Gloucestershire and Taunton, were carrying 13 suitcases full of cigarettes.

A further five suitcases and two holdalls containing cigarettes were abandoned on the baggage carousel. In total, 260,000cigarettes were seized off this flight.

The passengers were questioned by customs officers and were later released pending further enquiries.

Officials said the seizure indicated that crooks still saw small regional airports as soft targets, assuming security was less strict than the major gateways.

September 12 2003 - Local Boys raise our flag in Bolivia

The Tenerifan explorers Jose Suárez Trujillo and Pablo Miguel Castillo Linares who have recently made several successful summit attempts on the Cordillera Real Mountain ranges in Bolivia, managing to conquer the 6,549 meter altitude mark, today (12 of September) presented the Mayor of the county, Juan Damián Gorrín Ramos and the head of Sports, Oscar Tomas Pérez Rguez with the county flag that had actually accompanied them on this tremendous expedition.

Jose Suárez Trujillo , unmarried, 38 years of age, was born in Tamaimo, and has been a mountain sports fan from a very early age, taking part in alpine ski, rock face descents; and together with Pablo Miguel Castillo Linares has made many major mountain climbing ascents, El Teide, Monte Perdido (Ordesa), Pico Tempestades, Pico Margarida ( Posets-Maladetas – Aragón), and classic climbs like the Trans Pyrenean, GR-11 and the Ruta la Cresteria, GR-131. Pablo Miguel Castillo Linares, 30 years of age, was born in Adeje and is a Professor of Mathematics. The two men left on the 30 July with the intention of conquering the summit of Huayna Potosí at 6,088 meters altitude, which the Canarian sportsmen achieved after many days of extreme mental and physical effort. This was in fact the object of the expedition, but the two mountaineers set themselves the further challenge of conquering the Pico Illiman at 6.468 m. and the Sajama Volcano at 6.549 meters situated within the Central and Eastern Mountain ranges of Bolivia - which they achieved, taking the county flag on each of the three ascents.

The expedition overcame ice overhangs of some 50º, conditions of intense cold with temperatures down to minus 10 degrees, to make a base camp at 4,600 meters, and then drove on to create the next camp on a glacier at 5450 meters, from where the summit attempts were successfully made.

The conquered summits are situated in the Milluni area which is within the National Park Tuni Condoriri that encompasses the Central Mountain range and part of the Eastern section of the Real or La Paz Mountain range , which is in the Los Andes province (Cantón Tambillo) and on the borders of the La Paz province, some 60 km to the north of the city of La Paz, in Bolivia.

The Mayor of this County, Juan Damián Gorrín ramos, said he was delighted to know that the name of Santiago del Teide had been taken so far and so high, and was tremendously proud to receive this flag signed by the mountain climbers, one of them from Tamaimo and the other from Adeje. The flag will be given pride of place in the City council Offices of Santiago del Teide
