‘The train now leaving for Fonsalia’….. words which will eventually come true.

As promised, Tenerife Cabildo has approved a plan which will extend the proposed train of the south to Fonsalia (the small village between Alcala and San Juan).

The idea received cross-party support last March and the formal document has now been approved. It will go out for public consultation for 70 days and also to the various public administrations.

Four alternative routes at a cost of 307 million Euros were studied. Including five kilometres of tunnels and one and a half viaducts.

The train service will eventually unite Fonsalia with Santa cruz with the journey time taking 52 minutes.
The trains will run every 15 minutes and will be capable of reaching speeds of 220kms an hour.

Business owners in Icod are gathering support from town councils throughout the north of Tenerife to push for a planned railway to reach the old commercial town.

The regional government are planning to build a railway connecting Santa Cruz to Adeje, which will improve travelling to and from the capital to the tourist resorts of the south. The rail link will reduce traffic and modernise the island’s transport network. The lines will then be extended to reach Los Realejos.

A railway tunnel between La Orotava and Güímar is also in the advanced planning stage. Icod’s business association, Aspymecod, is playing the victimised card and suggests that by being excluded they are being treated as second class.

For the future progress of Tenerife’s northwest it is concidered that their inclusion in the railway network as absolutely imperative.

No doubt the councils further to the north feel the same and with more reason. Icod at least has a major bus station which acts as a hub for connections to many of the neighbouring towns and surroundings, whilst other towns are lucky to see one bus an hour.

The Tenerife Cabildo has announced that plans for a tunnel to link La Orotava with the other side of Tenerife are not a realistic prospect for at least 10 years.

Speculation has grown over the recent months that an enormous project to build the tunnel was about to be announced.

The corporation insists that the tunnel will not be even be in the first stages of planning until other projects such as the train from Santa Cruz to Playa de Las Américas are completed.
