Polish man drowns off Puerto Santiago

 	stormy-seas-playa-arenaA 33 year old Polish man and his 21 year old female cousin were washed off the rocks by high waves in the El Jurado area near the beach at Puerto Santiago at around 11.30pm on Tuesday night.

The woman managed to clamber over the rocks back to shore and was suffering from cuts bruises, hypothermia and shock.

An over night air sea rescue search was coordinated and the drowned man was eventually recovered the next morning from the sea near the Europa Buildings in Puerto Santiago.

The family had just arrived and they were staying at the Playa Arena hotel

The City Council is undertaking a project to reform and improvement the public lighting in Arguayo, Tamaimo and Puerto de Santiago.

The work has a budget of € 140,754.00.

The existing lighting and wiring, which is in poor condition, will all be replace by watertight fluorescent lighting with 36w lamps.

Discount Fair Puerto SantiagoSantiago del Teide Council has announced the dates of the next local Discount Fair.

It’s well worth raiding the piggy bank for this one, there’ll be bargains galore when craftsmen and retailers get together on Sunday 8th November at the Plaza Puerto de Santiago.

The fair opens at 10:00 am and continues through the day until 5pm.

There will be around 40 stalls selling shoes, clothes, pastries, sportswear, and much more.

There’s fun for the kids too with face painting and a bouncy castle.

So get there early it’s a great opportunity to get in some early Christmas shopping.

Painting and Photo competition – Puerto de Santiago

Once again it is the time of year for the Santiago del Teide “Nooks and Crannies of Santiago” painting and photographic competition.

The competition is open to non-professional artists or photographers, over the age of 16yrs.
The theme is Rincones de Santiago, or Nooks and Crannies of Santiago, and entries should reflect the picturesque nature and/or local culture of the municipality.

Artists are limited to three entries per person, and each painting must be a minimum of 40 x 30 cm and correctly marked with the artist’s name.

Prizes for the painting competition are:
First prize €612
Second prize €306
Third prize €153

Photographic entries are limited to 3 per person. They can be in colour or black and white and each must be a minimum of 30 x 40 cm, framed and clearly marked with the photographer’s name.
Prizes for the Photographic competition are:

First prize €306
Second prize €245
Third prize €184
Fourth prize €123
Fifth prize €62

Competitors are limited to one prize. Entries need to be handed in by 2pm on 3rd August to the Department of Culture at the Santiago del Teide Ayuntamiento, with the following words clearly marked on the outside, “Para el concurso Rincones de Santiago”.

All entries will be on show on 9th August an the Canarian Crafts show in Arguayo.

At 5pm the winning entries will be announced.

Puerto De Santiago Fiesta

New cultural centre for Puerto Santiago

 	fisher-womans-roundabout-puerto-santiagoConstruction work will soon commence, in Puerto de Santiago, on a three storey new Tourist and Cultural centre with a large urban park next to it.

It is a local project with local financing and the plot of land allocated is situated on the new road between the fisher woman’s roundabout and the New Costa Los Gigantes Hotel.

Plans are also in place to include a 432 seats theatre/auditorium on the third floor complete with dressing rooms, toilets, lifts, a box office and a terrace. On the lower floor will be a number of multiple-use salons and meeting rooms, a library with archives and a cafeteria.

According to the Mayor, Juan Damián Ramos Gorrín at a cost of three million Euros, once completed the building is expected to be a key installation for the area.

 

A special exhibition has opened at the Fisherman’s Museum in Puerto de Santiago.

It is organised by the Chimisay performance art group, from the North of Tenerife and brings together artists, photographers, musicians and poets.

According to the organisers, the objective of the exhibition is to make art fun and to expose people to all forms of art.

The exhibition opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 20:00.
