Playa Arena – 16th annual swimming race

The 16th annual swimming race from Playa de La Arena to Puerto de Santiago takes place at 18:00 hours on 9th July 2010.

The race covers 950 meters. The start line is at Playa de La Arena and the finish line is the beach at El Bajio in Puerto de Santiago.

The race is organized by the Department of Sports Hall of the Historic Village of Santiago del Teide, with the collaboration of the Federation Swimming Insular de Tenerife, Tenerife Referees Committee, Mar Red Cross, Civil Protection, Volunteer Fire Santiago del Teide and the Ad Hoc Underwater Civil Guard.

Entries may be made on website , www.santiagodelteidedeportes.com for more information call 922-86-81-08, lines open from 08:00 to 15:00.

On the day the female swimmers will head off first, followed by the men, in groups segregated by age

Entry fee is Euros 5.

Blue Flag award yet again for Playa arena.

playa-arena-beachBlue Flag status is awarded to beaches in more than 30 countries in Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean. The Blue Flag requires compliance with water quality standards, safety, general services and standards of environmental management.

The Blue Flag is a badge awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education to the beaches and marinas that meet a range of environmental conditions and facilities.

This year the awards went to the beaches of La Arena in Santiago del Teide (for the 24th consecutive year),El Médano, Leocadio Machado and La Tejita in Granadilla de Abona, Las Vistas and El Camisón in Arona, Troya I-II (Americas I-II) in Adeje,  El Socorro Los Realejos, Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz and La Arena (Mesa del Mar) in Tacoronte.

Many of these awarded beaches have a wide range of services such as showers, bars, restaurants, telephones, surveillance, police, Red Cross, toilets, sun-beds and umbrellas for rent, rental of sports equipment and access for disabled. Others have alternative services such as parking, camping or nudist area. Each has got its own personality and charm. Golden sands and white or black sand, wind and waves for water sports or quiet relaxation and serenity, different beaches to suit all needs.

Due to the number of Blue Flags beaches Tenerife is now  high on the list of best venues in the world.

This year’s Playa Arena to Puerto Santiago swimming competition, which was the 15th organised by the local council, attracted over 300 competitors.

First place in the men’s race was claimed by Francisco Javier Perez with a finishing time of 12 minutes and 51 seconds. Second place went to Jose Carlos Baez Gonzalez with a time of 12 minutes and 54 seconds and third place went to Ciro Ascanio Gutierrez with a time of 13 minutes and 59 seconds.

In the women’s race first over the finish line was Design Escatllar with a time of 15 minutes 28 seconds, second place was Usoa Gala Arocena with a time of 15 minutes and 29 seconds while third place went to Carmen Elsa Dominguez with a time of 15 minutes and 50 seconds.

There was also prizes for locals who entered. In the men’s category first place went to José Juan Casañas with a time of 16 minutes and 47 seconds, second place went to Thomas Jonay Glez Garcia with a time of 18 minutes and 13 seconds and third place went to Javier Diaz Linares with a time of 18 minutes and 15 seconds.

Local women’s category was as follows: first Dácil Hernandez finished, using a time of 21 minutes and 21 seconds, second place went to Vanessa Sanchez with a time of 23 minutes and 52 seconds, while the Third place went to Ana Belén Socas with a time of 27 minutes and 9 seconds.

 	playa-arena-beachPlaya arena beach has become the most awarded beach in Tenerife. Since 1987 as it has been awarded the blue flag each year for the past 23 years.

The Blue Flag is a recognized symbol to stringent health and environmental levels, the presence of adequate sanitation and waste, rescue services, first aid and lifeguard as well as wheelchair access and other facilities for the disabled and free wi-fi internet access.

playa-arena-beachPlaya Arena beach will receive its twenty-second consecutive year of ‘Blue Flag Beach “by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC).

The campaign of 2009 Blue Flag beaches and ports is a recognized symbol that requires compliance with stringent health and environmental levels, the presence of adequate sanitation and waste, as well as rescue services, first aid and lifeguard supervision.

Playa Arena beach is currently 175 meters long and is between 50 and 75 meters wide, has public toilets and showers, good access for people with reduced movement, as well as shops, banks and restaurants very close by.

Playa Area Heliport has no lights

Heliport Playa arenaAnyone seriously ill or injured needing urgent transportation to hospital via helicopter will not get the rapid service they need if the incident occurres after dark, because the heliport in Playa Arena has no lights.

This is a major cause for concern and lives could be saved with better facilities. Santiago del Teide council is being urged to install floodlights and introduce 24-hour operation of the heliport.

Body found at Punta Blanca has been identified.

 	police-and-guardia-civil-at-punta-blancaAn inquest will open today into the death of a Nottingham man, who drowned on holiday in Tenerife.

The body discovered at Punta Blanca on 31st October has been identified as Alan Baker, 53, of Station Lane, Farnsfield, Nottingham.

Mr. Baker, a company director, had been on a family holiday staying at the Costa Los Gigantes Hotel, in Playa Arena.

Police were called after Mr. Baker failed to return from an early morning walk. His body has been flown back to Britain.

 	folklore-group-los-gigantesThe Department of Tourism of Santiago del Teide, together with the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife and the Department of Culture organized a series of events over the weekend to celebrate Dia del Tourista – Tourists Day, which were enjoyed by both tourists and residents.

 	folklore-groupThe activities began with a show of Canarian products. Then later in the day Canarian folklore groups “Tayme” and “Breezes of Arguayo” entertained guests of hotels and apartments as they toured the streets from Playa Arena to Los Gigantes.

 	old-dogs-new-tricksThe main event was held last Saturday evening in the Plaza, Los Gigantes. The night started with a show of local products, and then the audience was entertained with performances from several Canarian folklore groups.

The evening ended with many lively songs from “Dogs Old New Tricks” who very quickly had the majority of the audience on their feet dancing.

Dia del Turista – Day of the Tourist

Santiago del Teide council are organising several fun events today and tomorrow to celebrate Dia del Tourista – International Day of the Tourist.

The celebrations begin this morning Fri 26th Sept 2008 at 10.30 with a show of Canarian products as well as Canarian folklore music and entertainment in the streets of Playa Arena.

This evening from 17:30 Folklore Canaria, in their traditional Canarian costumes, will be entertaining in hotels and apartments in the area.

Tomorrow evening Sat 27th Sept 2008 from 8pm in the plaza – Los Gigantes there will be a show of Canarian products as well as more performances of Canarian folklore music. The evening will end with entertainment from a well know local duo “Old Dogs, New tricks”

Tapas Route winner

Tapas route winnerThe awards presentation of the recent “Ruta de la Tapa”. (tapas route) competition took place at the Town hall last week by the Mayor, Juan Ramos Damian Gorrín.

The competition was organized by the Department of Trade and Tourism, in collaboration with the employers’ association, Dealers Santiago del Teide and Eating Plan de Tenerife.

The contest, held during the first ten days of August, had a total of 25 participating bars and restaurants from the Santiago del Teide district.

There were 3 judges, one member proposed by the Department of Trade and Tourism of the council, one by the employers’ association of the municipality and a third by the Food Plan de Tenerife.

The outcome of the contest was as follows:

A first prize of € 300 was awarded to the Restaurant La Taberna de Verin, Edif Eva – Los Gigantes, whose tapa was called “La Tapa de Verin”

Second prize of € 200, went to Tuscany Restaurant, in Playa de La Arena, for their entry called “ Montadito la Toscana”. (montaditos Tuscany).

Third prize of € 100 went to Little Italy Restaurant ,Tamara – Los Gigantes, for their tapa called “Champiñones Rellenos de Salsa de Queso”. (Mushrooms Stuffed with Cheese Sauce).

The event was also attended by representatives of participating restaurants in this first ever “Ruta de la Tapa”. All entrants were handed a diploma of participation.
