Media Player Los Gigantes!

I want to start this story with an apology, due to the office move for Los we have been completely run off our feet, and this great news for our area has been delayed. So I hope it’s better late than never.

improvements-in-calle-tamaraRecently the staff of had the chance to meet with the councilor for tourism Germán Jiménez who explained to us the latest plans for the area. It is important to understand that two years of single handed dedication on the part of Germán have resulted in our area, (Santago del Teide) being accepted to a very prestigious group of three other councils, Puerto de la Cruz, Arona and Adeje, who are entitled to special funding for tourism, many other areas would love to have this help.

It means that during the next 4 years (at present) funding to the tune of 6.6 million Euros has been approved for a number of projects to raise the standard in this area, some of which has already started such as the new pavements, pedestrian crossings, water pipes, drainage, cables, curbs etc in a number of streets in Los Gigantes.

new-tourist-office-in-los-gigantesPlans approved include a complete re-paving of the roads for el Marques Las Rosas all around the loop to the hotel Barcelo de Santiago including new sewers, pavements road surface and the planting of over 125 new trees. Other plans include a complete overhaul of Playa de la Arena, which is truly spectacular.

The new Los Gigantes tourist office, opening soon, has just been built on the small plaza by Tamara, as part of the on-going commitment to tourism in the area, other projects worthy of a mention include a complete revamp of the plaza in Los Gigantes and the one in Puerto de Santiago, re-surfacing of a number of roads throughout the area, new street lighting in the area.

The level of investment that this new status will bring to this area over the next few years I believe will truly help to transform the area to one of the most sort after destinations in Tenerife.

Gang of pickpocket arrested

fisher-womans-roundabout-puerto-santiagoPuerto Santigo is normally a quiet place on a Sunday afternoon, but last Sunday was rather different when a gang of seven Romanians were arrested and were all lined up around the fisherlady roundabout. Rumors quickly flew round, drugs bust, bank robbery, but in fact it was a gang of pickpockets who were arrested.

The culprits, all aged between 30 and 50 have been identified only by their initials, R.M., C.F.R., M.I., L.A., T.S and V.D and a woman, L.R.

After the police had received several reports from the public about purse and wallet thefts, a surveillance operation in the area followed. The gang were soon located and were watched through binoculars.

They arrived by hire car, met in a local cafe to select their targets. The victims were often tourists waiting at the bus stop by the sports centre in Los Gigantes. They would be distracted by one gang member with a map asking directions while another picked their pocket or handbag. A hire car would be parked nearby for a quick getaway.

What this gang failed to realise is there is only one way out of Los Gigantes and the local police backed up by the Guardia Civil arrested them at a road block on the exit road. Many items were recovered despite attempts from the gang to throw them out of their car windows.

The victims were then brought forward to help identify the gang.

Row brewing about fish farms locations

fish-farm-los-gigantesThe hotel association, Ashotel have received countless complaints from tourists regarding the location of the fish farms being too near to tourist beaches.

Whilst the association understand that fish farms are a large part of our economy and every effort must be made to protect the livelihood of the fisherman and his family, they insist that the farms could be situated on better sites away from the busy tourist zones.

The most affected areas are Arona, Adeje and Santiago del Teide.

Our own Mayor of Santiago del Teide, Juan Damián Ramos Gorrín is not opposed to aquaculture but considers that it should not take place in tourist areas, such as the cliffs of Los Gigantes.

They came in all shapes, colours and sizes but there was no doubting the big hit at the second annual Asociación San Francisco de los Animales dog show – among the male onlookers, at any rate.
Xena, a golden retriever, was the dog in question but most male eyes were turned to her owner, Sabrina Biagini, whose long and shapely legs made the pair firm favorites to win the fun class, Best Six Legs, in the competition. Read more

Happy New Year to everyone.

High winds and heavy rain was forecast for the Canariers over the Christmas and New Year holiday. The Los Gigantes area had its fair share of rain and many had flooded terraces to cope with but fortunately Christmas day was mild and sunny, although the sea remained rough. After a few more days of high winds and rain our luck was in once again as on New Year’s Eve it was very mild with a cloud free sky, and there has hardly been a cloud in the sky since.

The Los Gigantes Plaza on New Year’s Eve was heaving as everyone forgot the current crisis and enjoyed the evenings celebrations, many dancing until dawn.

The continuous rough seas and high swell delighted the surfing enthusiasts at Punta Blanca but has been a disaster for all the dive centre owners and whale/dolphin trip organisers who had hoped the Christmas busy season would boost business in this time of crisis.

The warm sunny weather brought many people out and on to the beaches for a last minute panic tan before the end of their holiday. Playa arena beach was packed and many chose to ignore the red flag to have fun in the waves. The life guard’s job was made very difficult as people ignored his whistles and shouts. People really don’t understand that it is for their own safety as the undertow can be treacherous and many over the past years have not lived to tell the tale.

Below are views of the area taken on New Year’s day.

1. Surfing at Punta Blanca
2. Snow on Teide
3. High waves Playa Arena Beach
4. Crowded Playa Arena Beach
5. Cliffs of Los Gigantes
6. Los Gigantes beach and Marina
