Woman killed in hit and run accident in Santiago del Teide

A 51 year old woman was killed in a hit and run accident in Santiago del Teide last night at around 7pm.

Statements to the police by several witnesses say she was hit by a blue or grey Toyota pick-up, which failed to stop. The woman was getting into her car on the main road in Santiago del Teide after visiting her mother when the incident occurred.

Emergency services were unable to revive the victim and she was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident, and the police are appealing for more witnesses.

The victim, originally from El Tanque, identified only by her initials, M.A., was a very well known local woman. The incident has left locals in a state of shock.

She leaves a 14 year old daughter and a 20 year old son.

Update 21.12.10 Someone has now been arrested in connection with the incident.

Tragic Accident at Loro Park

It is with great regret that Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz has announced the death of the Orca whale coach Alexis Martínez, following an unfortunate accident during the first training session at the stadium ‘Orca Ocean’, which as usual, involved seven coaches.
Alexis Martínez was attended to immediately by Loro Parque’s specialized staff and the Canary Emergency Department who responded immediately after a 112 emergency call.
After on-the-spot cardiopulmonary resuscitation he was taken by ambulance to BellVue Clinic, where he went into cardiac arrest.
This news has caused enormous pain to all the Loro Parque Orca staff and the show has been temporarily suspended as a sign of mourning.
Alexis Martínez Hernández was an excellent trainer with 29 years experience. He joined the Loro Parque family in 2004 which he loved. The post Mortem is expected to take place soon.

Spear fisherman wounded by his own spear gun.

A spear fisherman who was pushing his luck whilst spear fishing off Los Gigantes, accidentally shot himself with his own spear gun!

Spear fishing is banned in this area but the 48 year old man was practicing loading and firing his gun.

Fortunately the 48-year-old man suffered only minor wounds to his shoulder. He was treated by locals then taken to The University Hospital in Santa Cruz.
