lions-charter-night-jan-2011On Saturday February 5th 2011 just over 100 members and guests attended Lion’s Club Santiago del Teide Charter Night at El Marques, Puerto de Santiago. One special visitor was Ray Dobson, a founder member of this branch of the “Lions”.

The compare for the evening was Fred Dudman whose first job was to have all the members and guests sitting down for the hot and cold buffet. As with other events at this location the guests had a very good selection to choose from. The food was well appreciated and a big vote of thanks goes out to the staff for their hard work.

Once the meal was finished it was cabaret time and the first act was George Peña. The New Yorker kept everyone entertained for just over one hour. His comedy bridged the gap between American and British humour plus some very powerful singing. At the end of his act he was called back for more by a very happy audience.

Then Steve Gilbert, President of the Lions Club Santiago del Teide, gave a very short speech and drew attention to a new scheme to help some 50 families who are having a very hard time here in Santiago del Teide. Some of the money raised over Christmas has been placed in a voucher scheme for the purchase of food and is controlled by the local council. The President then proposed a toast to all guests. This toast was responded by Frank Pope who proposed Lions Club Santiago del Teide.

Then followed a currency note draw, name written on a note and placed in the pot. The winning note was Chris Goode who received a large basket of wines and spirits. All money raised from this draw will go to the new voucher scheme.

The evening was rounded off by music from Tuxedo Knights and Glam Slam which very quickly had everyone on the dance floor. This completed a very successful evening.

Stormy weather hits the Canaries

stormy-seas-playa-arenaHaving enjoying the past couple of weeks of beautiful sunshine and calmer seas another bout of stormy weather has hit the Canary Islands.

The gusty conditions follow the heavy rain that fell for several hours early on Tuesday which caused severe flooding to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

The Emergency Services in Lanzarote had one of their busiest days in recent times with 240 call-outs. Trials at the island’s main courthouse had to be called off when the building was flooded and Arrecife port was closed for several hours due to the sea conditions.

Meanwhile parts of La Gomera were also badly hit, with roads blocked by mudslides and debris. The bad weather forced the authorities in Tenerife to close the roads up to Mt Teide due to the snow and ice, although they were later reopened.

The sea conditions off Los Gigantes are rough but we got off lightly with only a few showers and not too much wind. The Met Office has warned of another storm front gathering in the Atlantic off the Canaries which is expected to enter from the west at the week-end.

Looks like I’m in for another few days holiday.DD
