Pay Parking introduced on Los Gigantes Marina

There is total chaos in Los Gigantes as the new pay to park system is introduced on Los Gigantes Marina.

Cars arriving at the marina are now stopped at the barrier.  It’s take a ticket to enter or reverse into the beach road to turn.  The many people who choose not to pay and need to turn around are causing traffic jams backed up to Tamara.

Those who choose to pay are charged €1.90 per hour.  Berth owners can purchase a monthly pass costing €55.

Locals who work on the marina are now taking up parking spaces elsewhere in the village much to the annoyance of business owners.

So those who used to park their car behind the hotel to enjoy a day at the oasis now find the only place they can get parked is on the marina at €1.90 per hour, unless they get there before 9am

By the end of next week residents and visitors will have to pay to park on Los Gigantes Marina.

A new barrier and ticket machine are currently being installed at the entrance to the marina.  Hourly fees have not been decided yet but will probably be in the region of 80cents to €1 per hour.  There will be a concessionary rate for businesses and boat owners.

There are also proposals by Santiago del Teide council to limit the amount of time people can leave their cars in one place on urban roads in the municipality.

The aim of the plan is to achieve a rotation of cars to benefit traffic flow, residents and pedestrians.  All roads will be classified into zones and sub zones.  General roads will allow parking up to one and a half hours, after this time the car will have to be moved and not return to the same space for four hours.  Residents can apply for a sticker for their car windscreens.

Parking in a road with a short term classification will be restricted to 15 minutes whilst general long term will allow parking up to two hours with no return within four hours.  All areas will be clearly marked to show their status.

Residents who would like a sticker will have to provide proof of where they live on application.

The parking plan is currently out for public consultation.

Saturday 15th October saw Santiago Del Teide Lions Club celebrating their President´s Night, with a magnificent Buffet Dinner and Cabaret evening at El Marques in Puerto Santiago.

Invited guests were Deputy Mayor Inocencio Doble and his wife Remedios and Legal Advisor to the Council, Antonio Espinosa and his wife Alexandra.

The evening was a huge success, with 89 guests in attendance.

Entertainment was provided by artist and showman Gavin Nicholas, who had many of the audience in tears of laughter and music to get everyone dancing came from the superb saxophonist, guitarist and singer, Stu McCoy.

It was a perfect evening for departing President, Steve Gilbert to hand the reigns to incoming President, Ken Ward.

Apart from the traditional welcome to all guests, Steve Gilbert was delighted to award the coveted “Lion of the Year” plaque to Terry Hill for his unstinting support and dedication to the work we do.

During the evening, brief speeches were made by Steve Gilbert, Ken Ward, Inocencio Doble and John Brookhouse from Las Rosas.

All were thanked for giving us such fantastic support and Inocencio Doble was pleased to announce, that after the 20th November General Election in Spain, the Ayuntamiento will be giving the Lions Club use of a local in Puerto Santiago. This will be set up as a store where people can donate unwanted items, that can then be sold on to generate more income to assist many local families experiencing difficulty in these harsh economic times.

It was announced by Steve Gilbert that during the last year, the Lions Club has raised 5,600 euros to put into their Food Voucher Scheme. It is hoped that with this new source of generating income, we will be able to support many more local people in need.

Deputy Mayor, Inocencio Doble addressed everyone in Spanish to give his personal thanks for all the help we were able to offer. His speech was ably translated by Jamie Gilbert, much to the relief of the majority of the audience.

All guests agreed that the evening represented tremendous value at only 30 euros per head and many are now eager to attend the next event, which is scheduled to be Charter Night in the early part of next year.

Ana Martin, Resort Manager for EL marques, was warmly thanked for the excellent service of all her staff in making this evening such a success and once again demonstrated that this venue provides a superb setting for this type of occasion.

With Spain’s economy undergoing such a bad period, hardships inevitably occur, especially among the unemployed who have families to support. This Lions club has designed food vouchers to the value of 10 euros each, which are distributed by the local Social Services, to between 40 and 50 those families, in the Santiago del Teide area.

The vouchers are recognized by the Transito Supermarket chain, and the Supermercado El Valle in Santiago Del Teide. The vouchers are for necessary food items only, toiletries, and fresh vegetables and fruit, no alcohol, cigarettes etc.

The Lions members hold weekly quizzes at El Marques Time-share resort, to raise the money, to redeem the vouchers. So far over 3,000 euros has been raised and spent, helping to alleviate the pressures of those in financial distress.

If anyone wishes to send a donation to help in this cause, a special account has been assigned at the ;-

Banco March, Playa de la Arena office,
Acc No 0087731. 0061 0215 10 0115530119
IBAN ES 28 0061 0215 1001 1553 0119

All the monies raised will be for the voucher effort, and nothing else.

About World Animal Day

A celebration of animals and their contribution to our lives

World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. However celebrations may take place within the two weeks either side of this date.

It is intended as a day of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about animals. It is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political belief or ideology.

Launched in the UK on 4 October 2003. organisations, groups, animal shelters, places of worship, schools, clubs and individuals who participated in what was to become an annual event, quite simply, helped make history.

I am sure you will agree that, building the World Animal Day initiative is a wonderful way to unite the animal welfare movement and something that everyone can join in with whether they are part of an organisation, group, or as an individual.

World Animal Day is not linked to any one individual, organisation or campaign, but belongs to everyone.

The Santiago del Teide Branch of Asociaciòn San Francisco de los Animales was the first association in the Canary Islands to officially participate in this world wide event, which can be held two weeks either side of 4th October.

Santiago del Teide’s tourist information offices in Playa de La Arena, Los Gigantes and the town centre had a busy September, with over 3,000 enquiries.

The office in Los Gigantes was the busiest of the three, with nearly 1400 visitors, the majority of them British and Spanish. The local council says the figures are a further reflection of the upturn in tourism enjoyed by the area in recent months.

Remains of giant squid found off Los Gigantes

The remains of a giant squid, possibly about 8 metres long, was spotted floating about two miles from the coast of Los Gigantes. The discovery was made by a film crew from the company Aquawork, who was preparing a documentary about the cetaceans’ colony in these waters.

The specimen of the genus Architheuthis was found last month in front of Los Gigantes cliff.

“The animal was in good general condition although some of the tentacles and the eyes were missing. It also showed its original pigmentation,” said Rafa Herrero, a documentary maker, to EFE agency.

According to Ángel Gerrea, professor of the Higher Council for Scientific Research(CSIC) and one of the leading specialists in cephalopods in the world, “it is possibly an adult female, which could be about 8 metres long with intact tentacles.”

Samples of the squid’s suckers and beak were taken and send the Association for the Study of Cetaceans in the Canary Islands (SECAC).
