Work on the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz will not be finished in time for Carnival, the  Cabildo has admitted. After a series of problems, the new-look square designed by internationally-renowned architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron should have reopened early in January, in time for Carnival. However, the corporation now says that the Carnival celebrations in the area as of mid-January make it impossible to complete the huge lake which has been built in the middle of the square. Work on the lake will be postponed until after Carnival in order to avoid mishaps, and the completion date is now expected to be to mid-February.
