Earlier this summer more than 30 amateur golfers came to get a piece of Tenerife’s golfing action and next year’s event is expected to be even bigger.

The 2008 event will commence in the week of May 23rd, the organisers are hoping to attract golfers from all over Europe. This year’s golfers came from the UK and competed for a selection of prizes and trophies. One of the competitors, James Laird said: “It’s an excellent tournament. The golf courses are very nice, the hotels are lovely, the company is great and you have a good holiday at the same time.” Various tourist organisations on the island sponsored the event.Golf Ball

Next year’s event will involve several charities. It is hoped this will attract significant sponsorship for the event. Tenerife offers warm weather, a great location, and a friendly atmosphere for those looking for a golfing holiday.

A body which was recovered from the sea off Los Cristianos is thought to be of a 68-year-old Tenerife man who went missing from a beach near Santa Cruz last week.

Jenaro Vázquez had not been seen since 1 August, when he failed to return from his daily walk along the Las Teresitas beach. His family believed that he may have suffered amnesia and had walked off into the hills around the beach. However, the body was spotted by the crew of the Gomera ferry and was later recovered from the water. Strong sea currents may have dragged the body out to sea and then southwards over the past few days.

Compañía Cervecera de Canarias, better known as CCC, the company that manufactures

Tenerife’s favourite beers, Dorada and Tropical,  announced profits of just under 25 million euros for the year 2006-2007, up by 15.8% on the previous year’s figures.

CCC’s total turnover increase by almost 9% to 140.8 million euros.  It was achieved despite a fall in sales of beer in the archipelago last year, mainly because sales of other drinks distributed by CCC in the islands were up by 3%.

Tenerife prepares for the Virgin Festival

virgen-of-candelaria.jpgVisitors and locals alike are gearing up for one of the highlights of Tenerife’s festival period, with the Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria.

The event takes place on August 14th and is attended by pilgrims from across the canary islands, with a range of events laid on to celebrate the patron saint of the region.

Religious and less formal ceremonies mark the event, with a re-enactment of the story behind the appearance of the first statue of the Virgin of Candaleria also taking place.

Dating back to the 14th century – and pre-dating the Spanish arrival – two local shepherds came across a figurehead of the Virgin Mary on the beach.

The legend declares that the bewildered shepherds were amazed by the miraculous statue, proving invulnerable when they tried to break it and making wounds appear on their hands. The statue was then treated as an icon of worship, before the Spanish landed.

Those making their way to pay tribute to the patron will often walk from all corners of the island to the quarter, a tradition which sees the local roads and lanes filled with processions of people.

This year marks the 12th festival and the summer show is the perfect time to take in Tenerife, with a host of other activities spinning off the procession itself.
