If you live in the area then can’t have missed the publicity. The Hollywood Motor Show starts today in Puerto Santiago.

The show has been a huge success in Santa Cruz, San Isidro and Granadilla and will be in Los Cristianos from 25th Dec to 6th Jan

David Stey, representative of the show, confirmed that the show comes with more than 400 tons of material on wheels and 15 trucks for assembly. There will be 90 minutes filled with tension and risk with stunt drivers deliberately rolling their cars. There are also motorcycles, quads, tractors and an authentic American Monster truck which will flatten anything in its way.

The show takes place at Calle Lajial, near the new Costa Los Gigantes Hotel. The road will be closed to through traffic.

Show times are:-
Friday 19th 20:00
Sat 20th 12:30 & 18:00
Sun 21st 12:30 & 18:00
Adults €15 Children under 14 €10

According to comments on local news blogs the show is well worth a visit.
We went to the motor show tonight and was very impressed. As the missus thought the stunts etc were brilliant for all the family boys and girls alike. Well worth the money when you consider how much it would cost to put on this sort of thing”.

rod-stewartThe organisers of the Rod Stewart concert which is scheduled for May 16th 2009 at the Adeje Golf Course have announced that tickets are now on sale.

More information about the concert, purchase of tickets, flight and hotel packages can be obtained from web site Ticket prices range from €50 if you don’t mind standing, up to €175 for a front row seat.

After the successful Sir Elton John concert , and the confirmation of Rod Stewart, Canaries Sun Live Festival are working on the production of shows from three other great artists for 2009, a project that has already been submitted to different governmental authorities.

xmas-fairFor the first time ever the Santiago del Teide Lions Club, the Asociacion de San Francisco de Los Animales – Santiago del Teide branch and the San Juan Asociacion got together and organised the biggest Christmas fair Los Gigantes has ever seen.

There was tombola, cakes, bric brac, crafts, clothes and many games to occupy the children as well as the Carnival bar raising funds for next year’s carnival.

xmas-fair-2The biggest problem all the organisers had to cope with were the dozens of people who could not wait for opening time, they all wanted to be first in the queue for a bargain.

Lion President Mary Thomson opened the fair and over the next two hours, despite the concern over looming of black clouds and a few spots of rain, the various charities raised over €3000 between them for their various causes.

xmas-fair-3Then in the evening the fund raising continued when the Lions kicked off their Grand Christmas raffle. There are cash prizes of 1st €500 2nd €300 and 3rd €200 to be drawn in the Los Gigantes Plaza on 23rd Dec in the Los Gigantes square after their walk about carol singing. To assist with the fund raising Santiago del Teide Council organised various superb entertainers in the church square for the early part of the evening then from 10pm – 2am Viana Shows took over and hosted an amazing variety of acts, including Hot Ice, Scheherazade, Ian Anderson, Glam Slam and Helen Dixon – Pride, who kept the audience glued to their seats, until they could resist no longer and had to get up and join in the dancing.

xmas-fair-4For the first time ever the whole show went live via Power FM radio to all seven Canary Islands, as well as being broadcasted worldwide on their web site.

During the show Lions members Mary, Lizzy, Sheila and Monica, in their superb outfits, raised over €1000 in raffle ticket sales and donations.

If you didn’t get your ticket there’s still plenty time. They can be purchased from any Lion member. They are on sale at MDI in Alcala and also in the office in El Varadero and the ladies will be calling into many bars during the run up to the draw.

There are many more photos, in two files, one of the daytime fair and the other of the evening entertainment, in the photo galleries. Click this link.

Rod Stewart concert in Adeje

rod-stewartSometimes it is not all doom and gloom, and this morning my day was suddenly enlightened when I heard that my teenage heart throb Rod Stewart is to perform in Adeje, next May.

It brings back memories of being a teenager in trouble with parents for sticking his posters all over my newly papered bedroom wall. I did win this argument because removing them would have ruined the wallpaper, I remember being grounded for a weekend for the offence, but it was well worth it.

The concert date is set for 16th May 2009 and is being organising by “Sun Live Canarias”, the same company who organised the Elton John concert last January.

A press conference is being held in the next few days to confirm the venue and ticket arrangements and a spokesman from the company says further superstar concerts are in the pipeline for Adeje.

Watch this space for more info – but I’m first in the queue for a ticket!

scrabble-night-at-the-chicken-shack-puerto-santiago“I’ve tickets here for the fun scrabble night on Nov 10th, you two will want tickets – won’t you”? It was John Broadhurst from The Asociacíon San Francisco de los Animales. Well, neither of us stood a chance of winning. We’d never played scrabble in years and without Microsoft Word and spell check there was no hope for us.

However, it was for a good cause as all the proceeds would be used for the benefit of stray and abandoned animals. As I am currently looking after a Mum and 5 kittens which were abandoned near me several weeks ago, and they all need to be neutered, we happily bought the tickets and joined in the fun.

Lions presidents night is the night when we celebrate the start of a new lion year and traditionally the president officially hands over power to a new president who has been elected by the club in a democratic (no arm twisting, vote rigging or opposition killing allowed) election.

This year was no exception, the main difference being that our current president was unanimously voted back for a second year in office.

Lion of the year jon-thornleyMary Thompson is now going into her second year as Lion President and her speech was short and to the point. Mary also, as is traditional, handed out a number of awards. The Lion of the Year award this year went to Club Secretary Jon Thornley. (pic right) and appreciation awards went to Ken Ward, Sheila Widdrington and Richard Dobinson.

Then night was held at El Marques in Puerto Santiago and what a fantastic night, the food was a sumptuous buffet, the staff were helpful and polite, José the head waiter was only too happy to help with last minute seating plan changes.

steve-delseyThe entertainment was superb, Rick Porter had one of the hardest jobs of the night providing the pre-dinner and background music for the evening, he was followed by Steve Delsey (left) a very funny man who had the audience laughing with some very quick humor, and then just to show his talent more he finished his show with an operatic song Nessun Dorma, which had the audience on there feet in appreciation.

Next Rick was back with some dance songs to get the dinner worked down, then a special surprise Tuxedo Nights(right), a close harmony singing trio, Tom Bell, Eddie Hastings and guess who, yep the one and only Rick Porter, had every one up and dancing, and brought the night to a fantastic close.
