OH and I recently decided to visit the West of the island for a special meal to celebrate an anniversary.  Initially we were disappointed as our favourite restaurant Flor del Drago was closed for the holidays.  We walked along the sea front at Playa L'Arena and didn?t want to spend this special night sitting at plastic tables and chairs so decided to head on to Los Gigantes.

Having brought our little dog along for the ride we realised we could not go in to Krishna?s so headed for Tipsy Terrace - closed and no notice on the door so along with two families who were looking totally bemused at not finding the place open, we headed back along the road.

I have heard the Wine Bar mentioned several times by entertainers that I am acquainted with who have worked there, so I thought we would give it a try, at least we realised the act should be good, but had no knowledge of what the food might be like.

As we entered we stopped the waitress to see if it was OK to sit on the terrace with our dog.  She said they were all dog lovers (first tick in the box) and it was no problem.  We were shown to a table with nice views and close to the entertainment (Jamie Rourke - first class singer) and our menu was brought. - so far so good.

I am not one of those ex-pats who likes to stick with what I know, and ordinarily I would not go somewhere for Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pud, but being a Sunday, and not knowing what to expect, we chose the 3 course special : lovely home-made pumpkin soup, roast beef with all the trimmings and as I am fussy about vegetables I can confirm these were fresh, done to perfection and nothing soggy out of the freezer.  I was so full I didn?t think I could manage pudding, but having spotted the hot sour cherries with ice cream, greed got the better of me.  Oh boy it was worth it. I will certainly be back with friends who just like good old Brit food, but this place puts the emphasis on GOOD. Not expensive, I think around ?14 for the 3  courses.

The staff were superb, very attentive, friendly and we even had mobile phones brought out to show us their pet dogs !!   This place is a hidden gem, I have been on the island for 6 years and never heard anything about how good it is so I am starting to spread the word, I hope you go and perhaps you can do the same.

  • Been on the island for six years and not heard of the Wine Bar, you obviously aren't from this area. It has been going for years. Originally at the same place as Tipsy is now but the staff are the same, just moved premises. The Wine bar has always been renown for it's Sunday dinners and the veg is always fresh. Also you should know that a lot of restaurants close at this time of year so yes it is difficult to find the usual places open for meals. But they will start re-opening this month and August ready for the rush of summer tourists. They take this quiet time to re-furbish and take their own holidays back home or other parts of the world.

Bernie, what I actually said was I had not heard how GOOD the food was, of course I have heard of the Wine Bar, I think I said that earlier in my post !!!

You are correct I do not live in the west of the island, but even in the tourist resorts in the south, when many places close usually in June, they at least leave a note saying when they will be open again.  The Flor del Drago clearly said they were on holiday.  In my opinion this is essential especially with the current climate when so many businesses are closing down.

  • I agree. The entertainment, food and staff are very good. Well worth a visit.
Now far better value than Tipsy Terrace which needs to look at food quality and prices.

  • I don't think you will need to book ahead there is nobody about and those that are are not eating out. The weather in the evenings has been so bad we have left the choice of dining until the last minute.

I agree with you. Last time we went into Tipsy for a meal, after waiting an awfully long time to be served, we asked Sarah if she could hurry up a little to be told 'take a chill pill'! When the food did arrive, it left much to be desired.

The telephone number above is wrong, the prefix (if dialling from outside Spain) should be 0034

  • Sadly, I have to agree with the recent negative comments on the Tipsy Terrace.  When we last visited in December (party of 4) the service was appalling and the food, although reasonable was very over priced.  Nobody bothered to tell us what the special of the day was, so we didn't know until we saw it served on the next table and the board outside had the following day's menu, which was a bit confusing.  Unfortunately, we were sat very close to the saxophone "player" who was very loud and not very entertaining, which kind of killed the evening for us.  In fact, by the time we eventually managed to get our bill (after giving up trying for coffee) everyone else around us had migrated to distant corners.  It used to be a favourite for us so hopefully someone will take note and do something about the situation.

  • Just back from a fabulous two weeks at the Harbour Club and just had to say yet again, we found the food and service outstanding at the Wine Bar.

The fish and chip night and the wonderful lamb was exceptional. I have to say they also serve the best milky coffee on the island!

Congratulations to Dodi and her team for keeping the standards up.

  • Just back from our usual two weeks in February and have to congratulate Dodi and her team yet again for the fantastic food and entertainment at the Wine Bar.

The Sunday Roast and the Lamb were as fabulous as ever and we will keep coming back for more!!

We were lucky this time and caught Nick Page and we had a really good night and would recommend this evening to anyone - don't miss it.

Dodi always seems to serve up piping hot food and provides a good atmosphere where everyone makes new friends.  The entertainment never fails and she seems to get her hands on all the best acts.

Well done again to Dodi and all the team.

    See you soon. XXX
