Puerto de la Cruz

We have just returned from our week up north where we stayed in the Vallemar hotel right on the front which I'd recommend. We were going to stay in the ambassador apartments but they were too far away from town.

We didn't hire a car but used the local buses and kept topping up our titsa card which was extremely good value.

We went to the botanical gardens - beautiful. 3 euros each so that was brilliant. Spent a whole morning there.

Went to La Oratava. The old town is beautiful.  The terraced gardens are beautiful. The street with all the Canarian balconied houses is wonderful and for 5 euros each you must visit the 15th century house where Peter Paul Ruebens once lived.

La Laguna we weren't impressed with. Too big and sprawling. A horrible long walk from the bus station along a busy unattractive main road to get to the old town which wasn't as nice as la Oratava. No quaint shops to mosy around just horrors like marks and Sparks.

Icod de los Vino's is attractive in the old part and many shops in the newer part but they all close in the afternoons.

Many varied and authentic restaurants up north and a lot cheaper than LG.  The food is much better than in the south.

The transfer from the south airport took 2 hours though so not good.

The weather was around 26 - 28 degrees each day in early October but much cloudier than the south.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable time but wouldn't return because of the transfer time, the cloudy weather, but most of all, we just prefer LG, Puerto Santiago, Alcala, Playa San Juan etc. Nice to have done it but it didn't feel like home, like LG does.
