When refugees arrive in the UK on a boat they are coming from France, which has a similar or lower infection rate to the UK and there are currently no travel restrictions from there, so it's an immigration problem and not really a Covid problem. I have no idea how they are received but I doubt there in any indecision as it is a regular occurance over decades, so there will be established policies for handling them.

When they go from Africa to the Canaries they seem to have a very high infection rate and are travelling to a much lower infection area, so Covid is a big issue. Seems they are handled well but it would be better if they were recorded on African stats, rather than Canarian stats.

The government of the canaries stated yesterday that not one single case of covid19 has arisen as a result of immigrants coming into The Canaries. The 13 that came in to Playa Chica in Tenerife most recently were COVID free. Please don’t encourage such defamatory remarks about our island which has such a low rate of the virus but is being strangled financially by political moves instigated by the UK government to put pressure on EU over Gibraltar. We are far safer here than in UK, we had a well planned and strictly enforced lockdown which proved successful in limiting the outbreak. The British press and government has a lot to answer to in regard to fake news and information.

Whilst I feel very sad for people who will have their holidays cancelled & it does not matter if you agree or disagree with lockdowns your own health is the most important thing & I myself criticized the UK Government for not acting soon enough in March.

But what does annoy me is the two faced attitude of the Spanish Government, my wife & myself were trapped in Tenerife for 6 weeks under almost house arrest by their actions, with the position we were in we could see the Police patrolling the streets, the Coastguard in the air & on the sea patrolling the beaches & worst of all the drone flying over your property making sure you were not having a bbq or guests in your home, almost thought Franco was back in power.

All this going on when the rate of infections were VERY LOW & when we caught the first flight out on the 01/05/20 the total of deaths in the whole of the Canaries was 123 people and they say WE the UK are now over reacting by not allowing tourists to the Canaries & Balarices, "pot calling the kettle black comes to mind "

I’m sorry I don’t understand what you are saying unhappy? The rate of infection was drastically reduced and contained as a result of such excellent lockdown and enforcement of the rules, which certainly for us in Puerto Santiago, near where you were, were nowhere near as you outline. Just firm handling which unfortunately is what people nowadays need. We have a very low infection rate down in the south and west, so why are spain being two faced please?

A lot of the immigrants arriving have Covid and they were counted in the figures for the Canaries creating a huge spike recently, on one day there were 59 out of a boat with sixty odd in it.

So I don't doubt they are contained and don't cause knock on infections but they appear on the official numbers and graphs making it look like there is a spike in the Canaries, the same as the rest of Europe.

It is easy to get rid of infections when there is a mass exit for people and then a closed border, not when they all came back to the UK. The spike took the government by surprise because more than 1000 people arrived back in the UK infected from Spain and Italy over a short time, seeding the infection all over the place and it started much earlier than was thought. People had it in December in Europe.

Georgie, my wife & myself flew back to the UK on the Wizz air flight on the 01/05/20. The only masks available from the Pharmacies were the blue type, it was no problem, you can take them off to eat food & drinks & also in the loo so you do not have to wear them for 4 to 5 hours non stop.

Mind you the way things are going nobody will be flying anywhere soon, I can see this Coronavirus going on for years until a vaccine is produced & every single person in the world gets a jab.

Well isn't all designer stuff overpriced stuff that you pay for looks over function?

I got 100 of the medical grade ones for about £1 each. They are now a bit cheaper.  So far I haven't worn one because I haven't been anywhere other than outdoors. We worked out it is cheaper to get food delivered  from Tesco than it is to drive there and back and use a disposable mask.

I can’t agree with your statement about the Spanish government’s ‘stupid  actions’. I am very grateful for the strict, clear advice we were given which in turn meant we could come out of lockdown safely and enjoy the bubble we are currently enjoying. If the insurance company have illegally refused your claim, then I’m sure with your historical business connections you have the services of a first class lawyer to take matters further on your behalf. I assume before you decided to stay on in what you described earlier as your first class accommodation, your insurance company gave you assurances that they would cover your expenses and armed with this you will have a watertight case . The only Government that has got it right is possibly Sweden. Spain had a great lockdown but there is no end game apart from no socialising or international holidays until there is a vaccine or cure. The UK seems to be coming to the same conclusion. So the world economy is ruined for the 99% and we can have no fun for the foreseeable just to extend the lives of the 1% that are the most unfit and on their way out anyway. Is it only me that thinks that is a total failure of logic? There is no shortage of people on this earth, in fact far too many.

The "new normal" should be that you need to keep yourself fit or hide away from the world, not that the normal for the rest of the population should end.

Unhappy, please stop bleating about being stranded over here, there was absolutely no reason folk could not get back to the UK if they had acted immediately when the Canarian Government advised tourists to vacate their apartments/hotels back in March. I arranged flights for three separate couples in apartments close to me who had no internet access. I managed to get all three couples to the airport of their choice without any difficulty. It was only the people who chose to delay their return that were stranded and I’m not surprised your insurance company is now refusing your claim for, what was, an extended holiday.

Well the war was for the benefit of everybody and wasn't as damaging to the economy and people could still go to pubs, restaurants, cinemas, each other's houses, shake hands, etc. I wasn't born then but I imagine dentistry and medical care didn't stop, either. International holidays were probably out though!

Go on gov.uk and you’ll find every eatery who are taking part in eat out to help out within 2 miles of a postcode, there’s loads, we’ve already been today and plan on going several more times to various establishments this month

PS it’s not a voucher, you just get your meal and drinks half price/£10 off  but only non alcoholic drinks are included in the scheme

If you have visited Gibraltar, and did the military/defence tour. You will understand how we can never let it go to Spain. It would be a dishonour to the thousands of lives that have protected it as part of the UK.
The Rock is almost hollow with the defence positions and gunnery locations cut into it. Never mind roads and barracks etc.. It tells quite a story.......

Sorry to be rude however Georgie you really are a pillock.

We went to a local pub last night and got half price 3 course meals. First time we have been in any building other than our house since lockdown. I was expecting staff in masks, one way systems, spaced out tables, no cash, etc.

In actually fact it seems to be over here. Just a sign saying keep 1+ metres distance but the tables were too close to do that and it was full on Tuesday night! Some floor markers 2m from the bar and a hand gel dispenser.

Apart from that it was completely normal. Most tables were for four and had two couples similar ages, paying separately, so not the same household, despite it being in Greater Manchester, where that is currently banned. 

We are in the Wigan borough which has much lower rates than the rest of Manchester and everybody I have spoken to is really angry and say they will ignore it. This ranges from young people to a retired prison governor and a retired head teacher and other normally law abiding people. So I think the government have lost control here. If you penalise people when they have done nothing wrong they lose all respect for authority.
