  • Look through previous postings in this string.  I have spoken to some people who can access the web cam with a vista computer.

  • Thanks for that Dolly.

I have explored many avenues on this matter including Vista internal protection issues, allowing program execution without restriction etc.
I have searched for a solution with vigour.

If someone, who has managed to get the Web Cam up and running with Vista can explain what settings they had to change, if any, that would be useful.

A Service Pack is due for Vista, some may say a major overhaul. Maybe the simple solution will be there.

Windows XP works without doubt. Anyone else with Vista and unable to view the webcam?

  • I have two computers both with vista ,one upgraded from xp the other pre installed with vista.I cant get the webcam on either despite following all the instructions. The service pack may well sort out the problems, you can get the Beta version from the microsoft website.I might try and will let you know the outcome.  ;D

  • Fix/solution for viewing the webcam page in Vista.

Goto Tools - Internet Options - Security - then uncheck the protected mode box if checked.

Click on Trusted Sites, and add "losgigantes.com" to trusted sites list.

Then log on using the administrator profile (not a profile with admin privilleges, but the one Microsoft set up called 'administrator'. If it's not on the login screen you need to go to control panel, users, and tick the box which allows the administrator profile to be visable on the login screen.)

Once logged in as administrator, bring up the losgigantes.com site, and go on to the webcam page. The install bar should flash etc prompting an active x installation. Proceed and install as you would in XP.

Log off, and log back into your usual profile, turn protected mode back on (if you use it) and everything on the webcam page should work.

I think the problem is caused by the webcam viewer requiring administrator permissions since the install involves unsigned active x scripting.

    Regards,

    Tom

  • Brilliant - Well done tolkien!

I carried this out in Safe Mode with Networking - this gives you full Administrator rights.

  • Many thanks to tolkien;)

Here is a full detailed solution with screen shots to view the webcam with windows vista

Go to "Tools" - "Internet Options" - "Security" tab - then uncheck the "Enable Protected Mode" box if checked like the picture below

Click Apply you will get this message

Click "OK" (don't worry we will put this setting back after installing the activex control)

Click on "Trusted Sites" Click on "Sites" untick "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"  and add "http://www.losgigantes.com" to trusted sites list.

Click "Close" to close the Trusted Sites window

Now click "Ok" to save and close the Internet Options window

Ok now we have to log on using the administrator profile (not a profile with admin privileges, but the one Microsoft set up called 'administrator'.

To do this the best way I found was to start up in safe mode with Networking (Thanks to orange for this info)

Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button and click the arrow next to the Lock button , and click Restart. You will need to press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts.

You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option "safe mode with Networking", and then press ENTER. Wait for it to load

Ok now open Internet Explorer and navigate to http://www.losgigantes.com/webcam/webcam.html

Now right click on the yellow bar at the top

Click "Installation Blocked" - "Install Activex Control" then you should see this window below

Click on "Install" you should see this window below

Click "Unblock" then you should be able to view the webcam image on the page.

Now Go to "Tools" - "Internet Options" - "Security" tab - the Security tab will still be on Trusted Sites we now need it to be on "Internet" then check the protected mode box click "Apply" and "Ok" close internet explorer and restart your machine.

Now you should be able to view the webcam page without any problems.

  • I wondered how long it would take someone to comment.  The web cam survived the extremely high winds we had over the weekend, however it moved slightly on its mast. We have been able to compensate a bit with camera adjustment.  I also see that it needs the sand cleaned off the housing glass.  It's on the list of jobs to do, but it is up a very high mast and not easy to get to.

  • Those of you who are unable to join in the firework celebrations tonight can watch the display on the web cam.  They usually kick off sometime after 11.30

  • Web cam has been reset and repositioned this afternoon, so hopefully it should be ok later.  Remember you get a still picture every 8 seconds ? don?t expect it to be like the tv.  Let me know if it is successful as I will be joining in the fun and watching the fireworks from Los Gigantes.

  • DaRKeTaMin has finally managed to hoist our steeplejack up to the top of the mast to reposition the web cam and give it the clean it desperately needed.  He's now suffering from a bad back!

  • For those of you who have not seen it this webcam is a serious piece of kit.

I have taken a photo of it and will post it on here if required but the photo does not really do it justice.

  • Dear Dolly,
I would just like to congratulate you on your local news website, very informative, well thought out, WELL DONE YOU !!!

I had a nearly fatal accident at home and have learnt my lesson well, I slipped and knocked myself unconcious the result was that i was a week in Candelaria hospital, two stitches above right eyebrow, Fractured nose in two places, cut lip, anyway i had to have an operation to fix my nose ( Always wanted a nose job) the reason Im telling you all this is i was in the hospital and had my  operation cancelled at the last minute because of the little boy who had had his face mauled by the dog in Teide national park.

A few patients really kicked off, unhappy at having their surgary put back another day, but I completely understood, as my surgeon was one of the team opertaing on the reconstruction of the boys face.

The staff at Candelaria where all BRILL, I have nothing but praise for them.

    Ciao for now.
