  • Tenerife Palm tree epidemic

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad news on the local radio this morning regarding the Island?s palm trees. 90% of the Island?s trees have been infected by a tropical disease blown in from the fierce calima winds of last month. In the next few weeks they will all have to be chopped down and buried (probably in the Piris waste plant)
It?s a great shame as Tenerife?s image will be damaged for a few years while they replant thousands upon thousands of palm trees but there is no alternative solution.

Culling will begin next week according to the Cabildo of Tenerife. Several plastic version of the trees will be erected in the prime tourist resorts for the time being costing 12 million euros.

  • Many a true word is spoken in jest.

?The most recent threat comes from a beetle called the picudo rojo, which has been ravaging many of the islands? signature Canary palm trees over the past year. The beetle appears to have spread from nonnative palm trees that were recently brought into the islands.?
