Stomach virus strikes again

  • Just returned after 3 weeks in  LG and again I leave with a very negative feeling after again been hit by the stomach bug, that's 3 years out of 5.
Talking to friends of all age groups there is more talk of quiting LG as this bug is so prevalent in the resort.

I know people will say its caused by people flying in or the cruise liners, but I have travelled world wide and in less refined places than LG without this problem who are also visited by cruise liners and aircraft.

My nose tells me we should be looking at the sewage smell from the ocean, but if the authorities don't act then there will be less visitors in the coming years including myself.

  • This official website http://www.hpa.org.uk/hpr/infections/enteric.htm#ent4 reported on 9th November that norovirus outbreaks in England and Wales hospitals for the period weeks 40-44 was 27% up on the same period as last year, so I think you will find problems everywhere, not just in Los Gigantes.

  • Sorry to hear of your illness, Bakerbob. Just wondered where you stayed in LG - hotel or self-catering? These bugs are so easy to pick up - supermarket trollies/ door-handles, etc, even when you take extra care by washing fruit & veg in bottled water. After numerous visits to LG (approx 20 in last 12 years), I can only remember being ill once.  We have stayed in hotels, but mostly in own accommodation. Maybe we were just lucky and you were unlucky? Hope you feel better soon.

  • I also have returned from Los Gigantes (20 Nov 2012) and picked up this bug at the end of a 2 week holiday .
There were 12 other people in our self catering apartments that we knew of who had also contracted it . We were not aware of any other problems prior to 12th . The bug is not restricted to Los gigantes as on the coach back to the airport someone on the bus was also sick and he had been at Santiago and on the plane home other people were also sick who had not been in this area .
I doubt that this was brought from the UK as it is not that prevalent in the general public . Is it significant that it comes after the storm that hit the area the week before . There was a sewage smell in some places

  • The first time I caught the bug was in the LG hotel the last two years in a time share and we eat out quite a bit. I know back in the UK the number of people in hospitals has risen but LG seems much higher % wise.
If the number of people in LG is not higher than average the perception which people go on will stop people re booking a holiday

  • hope you are both feeling better

you say that it's not so prevalent here but Norovirus went round our office like wildfire last month, nothing to do with Los Gigantes, just making the point that these viruses are everywhere, it seems that when one person gets it, no matter how good personal hygiene etc is, that everyone they come into contact with risks coming down with it.

We go to Los Gigantes every winter for several weeks and I'm yet to be convinced that its any more prevalent there than anywhere else

  • Bakerbob 'friends quitting LG as bug is so prevalent here' !!! this bug is EVERYWHERE and especially in the UK, bugs spread !! nothing to do with hotels, SC establishments etc etc etc - people and surfaces spread bugs. Why do people always blame the resorts and hotels :(

  • Interesting article from my mate Jack which relates to last years comments about Norovirus in Los Gigantes.  For anyone who doesn't know the Beehive is a very British pub in Puerto de la Cruz - 8 out of 10 men don´t wash their hands

  • Chiquita is quite right about the current high incidence in the UK  (for the time of year) of  the  vomiting  bug - it was widely reported in the media that it had arrived a month early. So  it would not be unexpected for there to be a higher than normal incidence of  the virus among  British holiday makers in Tenerife at the same time.

Those of you who claim that the incidence of the virus is greater in Los Gigantes- where is the  data-  where is your proof ?

I'd like to take you back to a news item posted on this website  on May 2nd 2011. It was a report of an interview by Paul Marley with Councillor McKenna.  It covered the issue of  reports of  alleged
vomiting outbreaks at the Los Gigantes Hotel. I quote Mr Marley's news report:-

“The public health authority, from Santa Cruz, had been requested by the hotel to help and visited the hotel a number of times during the last year to advise on additional hygiene precautions that should be used to help control the original outbreak and help with the sterilisation of the dining room, although no trace of the virus has to date ever been found in the dining area. The Health authority believed it had not started in the hotel, but was brought in by a client/s from a cruise ship. The authorities and the hotel continue to monitor the situation.”

If you do a Google search for “Cruise Ships Norovirus”  you will see that there have been many reported  incidents in the past  of  Norovirus  on cruise ships including some  which have docked in Tenerife, bringing the virus with them.

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology-science/29-cruise-ship-passengers-hit-170288

    http://travel.aol.co.uk/2012/05/21/170-passengers-hit-with-vomiting-bug-on-cruise-ship/

Finally, I  quote from a recent news report  published by the newsinthesun website:-

November Cruise Boom Heralds Winter Bonanza For Tenerife

The port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will break all records in November as it welcomes 67 cruise ships carrying 172,900 passengers and crew to the island.
During the month, the ever-growing popularity of the port will see the arrival of seven ships making their first stop at the island, as will 14 others as the winter cruise season gets into full swing
November will see no let-up in cruise ship traffic, which has already seen healthy business in October, with some days seeing the arrival of up to four ships a day, culminating on November 10 when five ships will be in port at the same time.

Perhaps a more fitting headline might have been: -

  • I have suffered with this twice and only whilst in Puerto Santiago.

There is never hot water to wash your hands in hardly any of the rest rooms/toilets.  Maybe that would help.

I bring an anti bacterial hand gel with me now and just fingers crossed I am not cursed with it again.

  • I have visited LG for 16yrs  staying at the hotel and have never contracted the bug, nor have my group of friends. Yes, it is doing the rounds in England at the moment. So people stop blaming LG. Its a beautiful place. I do have some concern that someone may help me with. On the road down to the Marina on the left just before the lido, there is situated a very smelly tank. I hold my breath every time I pass, is it contaminated ?  I had a one time thought of renting the apartment by the Oasis but was put off when it overlooked the tank.

  • We are just back from 2 weeks in LG, this time we did not get the virus (first time in 3 years). But our neighbour did. We had runny noses and sore throats for the stay, though may have picked up on flight over. We also had flu jab in london 4 weeks ago, just to help our immune system. Maybe it worked, who knows.

    DONT COME OUT
    DONT GET ON A FLIGHT
    WASH YOUR HANDS

BASICALLY DO NOT SPREAD THE VIRUS.

    why cant people understand this?

  • I don't think its people taking the virus to LG. The virus is intrinsic to the area. Someone suggested it is possibly due to the untreated sewage passing thru village at various points, and the fly's then having access to it. Then maybe transmitting bacteria into resturant kitckens etc. And being away visitors are eating out all the time. The kitchens may not be as clean as you would like to imagine.

  • Janey, I am sorry but I think your reply to Pilgrim is VERY rude and not called for!
We had the virus 2 years ago in LG, private pad, ate in and out, yes we do wash our hands.
Lots of people had it as well. I posted on here at the time. It is very obvious that LG does not want bad publicity, this problem tends to be swept under the carpet, some people are in denial, yes the uk gets it, as does cruise ships, but why is it always prevelant in LG and Santiago? you CAN smell sewage near the Lido!
It does not put us off though, we will be taking a chance just after Christmas, but, the problem DOES exist.

  • as I said earlier in these conversations. There IS a problem near the Lido area. I have been very fortunate and never contacted it in LG's. The poor hotel went thru it in the English National Press last year which was very unfair, when it is an area problem. Cannot anyone contact the enviourement agency to investigate. Hope all those infected get well soon.

I tried two years ago and spoke personally to the mayor at a public meeting.  He took great offence at my suggestion that there was a problem with sewage disposal in Los G. and gave me a right telling off in public for suggesting it.  I don't know if an "environmental agency" exists in Tenerife.  Everything here seems to be controlled by the mayor and all my other attempts to improve various health and safety issues in Los G via the Ayuntamiento over the last 8 years have failed miserably.

  • Well done to you Tanemera for "bringing it up", so to speak. Another thought is that it can only get worse, for at some stage in the future, all the new developments below 'San Fransisco' will be occupied. So that must dramatically increase the sewage being piped into the sea through the village. I imagine it must be close to capacity now.
I for the moment will not be taking "Janey's" advice and holidaying somewhere else. But while last out we did meet an awfully rude and vulgar female in Los Americas, maybe "Janey" should consider a relocation their as I think they would make great buddies.

  • Thank you Pilgrim!  At last someone agrees that the sewage "treatment" plant is no more than a pumping station!  The treatment plant used to be under the "white elephant" complex opposite the fisherlady roundbout and also down the side of the road to Barcelo Santiago where the other white elephant, the new car park (as yet unopened after two years), is now situated.  Incidentally, I tried voting for the other party last time round but, guess what, the encumbent mayor "crossed the floor"!  You can't win!

  •  :-[apologies if i upset some of you - maybe i was being overdefensive. many of the replies (before mine) were inferring that los gigantes was the only place where this virus took hold.  it isnt. and, you know what, i have been waiting to use toilets and have been shocked at how many people come out of a cubicle and go straight back to the bar/restaurant table and dont wash their hands.
i wouldnt like folks to get the wrong idea of los gigantes, if i read this and was thinking of visiting los gigs for the first time, it would put me off.
the virus isnt instrinsic to los gigantes.

..... or maybe i did find the root of the problem ;D ;D

  • That's fine Janey, were back in LG for the month of January. I will have a word with my wife about the personal hygiene, but will have to do it in a delicate manner. She's a large lady, I use that term loosely, who flies of the handle easily (I don't want that griddle pan on the head again). Something I wish I knew before we got hitched this autumn after she went AWOL during the Olympics from the Kazakhstan Shot Put Team. Still, she speaks a bit of Russian, so that may come in handy now.
