SKYPE - HELP ME PLEASE !!

  • I'm a bit of a technophobe (that's probably an understatement !!!) but I have been told to register with the above as I will soon be relocating to Los Gigs and have been advised that this is probably the cheapest and best way to communicate with everyone back home. However the website is very vague and I'm not really sure how this all works. I registered yesterday and it cost me nearly 50 quid despite the price of 27.99 being quoted and now when I try and log in I'm unable to (I have logged a call with their support team) but there is no telephone number at all to contact them. Does anyone out there have SKYPE and can give me a brief idiots guide on how it all works - will I need one of these SKYPE phones for example - the lap top I have has built in webcam, microphone etc etc. HELP !!

  • tlg, try and sign on with Direct Telecom here in Tenerife. Their calls to UK cost 7/8's of nothing and they are very reliable. You also use your existing equipment.

I live in Los Gigantes, and have Skype, when I downloaded it, Ididnt pay anything apart from Skype Credit. I was told to purchase a head phone set with a microphone, this works pretty well, although when making phone calls, it can disconnect sometimes. I do not have a phone, but have Cable and Wireless from CBC Computers ( which is on this website) this works really well. Worth a Call to them when you get here, they will help you all they can. Hope this helps

  • Thanks Jodie - I was told that this would be a one off payment only - what is the Skype Credit that you refer to ?? Can you also use webcam via SKYPE and do other friends/family have to part of it to get it all for free ?? As you can tell all of this 'stuff' is new to me and I'm really struggling to get a grip of it all.

I have already been in touch with the computer company you mentioned and they were really helpful, will be contacting them when I come over.

  • Hi tlg

To use skype first you need to register, which you have already done. Then login with your user name and password. Once you have signed in you have 2 ways of calling, one is by simply dialing a number the same as an ordinary phone, the rates are very cheap have a look for yourself.

    http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/prices/callrates/

The other way is by adding another persons accout name to your list of contacts and calling them from your computer direct to their computer, this way it is totaly free, you don't pay anything. A skype phone is a good thing to have, I have one myself, it makes things a lot easier and the built in mic and camera you have on your laptop will work fine.

The money you have paid will have been added to your account, it's a bit like topping up your mobile phone, this is your SKYPE CREDIT and will decrease as you make calls to mobile phones or land lines.

If you are having problems loggin in to your skype account check your email.  I'm sure that they must have sent you your login details via email, you could also try the forgoten password page here.

I don't think they have a telephone number that you can call but I have found this link which might help you - some topics on how to use skype and a contact customer support page, you can fill it in and send them a report.

    Hope this helps you!  ;)

  • Thanks so much for all of your help - I think I have actually registered with a company that is NOT the official SKYPE UK Website (hindsight and knowledge are a wonderful thing) - I have now downloaded the correct thing using the official UK site

I am 50 quid down, the site that I logged into is probably a valid website but they have charged me for the download which I still haven't received as I can't log in, maybe someone can have a look at the link and tell me what sort of business they do and exactly what I have paid for - it is very misleading and looks like the SKYPE site, it was probably was a bit naive of me to go ahead and pay but that's what you get if you don't really know what your doing. Silly me !!

    The site

    www.skype-stop.com

Are offering a one off payment for downloading programmes off the internet. I look at it as being a CON they charge you for downloading free programs using their "high speed downloads"

Get Instant Access to the world's best software programs on the market. Within minutes you can be downloading your favourite programs and get free help tutorials and bonus software. There are absolutely no costs per download.

Very cleaver they say they are not charging you for the downloads only for using their service.

Skype is free software and sould stay that way!

I have also reported this website www.skype-stop.com to Skype

If you have paid by credit card get in touch with the company, explain the situation, you may get a refund.  If you paid by Paypal go to your account and report the transaction, the resolution centre will investigate and possibly refund your payment.

Let me know how you get on.

  • That is so helpful - you've no idea the problems I have had trying to get in touch with them all to no avail, I can't thank you enough. As you can see from their webpage it is very misleading especially to someone like me who isn't used to all of this.

I will let you know if I get my money back - will buy you a pint when I'm out there !!

  • It may be that the company in question has not broken any criminal laws by contractually offering something for payment which is available free from other sources and may just be ldblquote guiltydblquote  of sharp practice.

I donquote t want to sound alarmist but you said that the website ldblquote is probably a valid websitedblquote . What worries me is that it may not be and it could be an illegal scam. Given that they have your credit card details, perhaps you should cancel your credit card asap and alert your credit card company to the possibility that they may attempt to draw on your account without authorisation.

  • The legal team at SKYPE are aware of them and you're right when you say they are not doing anything illegal - just very very clever wording on their site. My credit card company may not refund the money - it is now in dispute - however I have had an email from Skype-stop and they are telling me that hey have received no payment and that they do not have me registered as a customer on their database, they are asking for the last 7 digits of my card details again - I have cancelled the card and will let you know if any thing else happens. Once again thank you all for your help - I will not be too hasty next time !!

  • If the name ldblquote Skypedblquote  is a trade mark, then its use by anyone  other than the official Skype company is probably illegal. It looks like the Skype name has been used in the form of a misrepresentation to lead people (as it did you) into the mistaken belief that they were dealing with the official Skype company.

Your argument to your card company is that based on important misrepresentations made by the other party you were mistaken as to their  identity and you would not have intentionally dealt with anyone other than the official Skype company for the provision of this service.  For this reason, your ldblquote contractdblquote  is legally void on the basis of mistake and you want your money back. You cannot return the program because the other party has not provided contact details which is clear evidence that they have not acted in good faith.

You have another argument that the contractual consideration promised or implied by the other party for a demonstrably faster download speed than the industry standard has not been performed, so again, you want your money back.

If the other party has already debited your credit card and they are asking for authorisation to do so a second time (on the basis that the transaction did not go through the first time) then this is further evidence of bad faith on their part which you should present to your card company.

If your card company does not accept your claim then tell them that you want to appeal  to the Ombudsman or Regulator. This will not cost you anything but will probably cost the card company much more than your 'a350 so they may be more inclined to settle.
