  • A news article in today?s news 7th March 2008, Safety Warnings For Women is a document which was  emailed to me from one of our forum viewers.

Having been out of the Uk myself now for 23yrs, therefore very much out of touch with what is going, on I was rather alarmed at the content.  The document, issued by the Met. Police, offers some very good advice and should be read by all ladies Click this link www.losgigantes.com/news

  • Hello Dolly

Anything that starts with ?This actually happened a few weeks ago? is likely without verification to be a false
story designed to cause alarm and distress. Trimmings added to give it credence etc.

I would not disagree that UK Streets are more unsafe than they have ever been.

  • I agree, you never know what to believe, especially from newspapers, but if the article wakes up women and makes them more aware of what could happen then I feel the article was well worth posting.  Men are victim of muggings too!!

I have to add that the Los Gigantes area is a relatively safe place. Using common sense a women can go out at night on her own.

  • This has all the appearances of a hoax. Looking it up on Snopes.com you will find others like it and this appears to be a mish mash of several. In addition the language used indicates an American origin (predator)

I cannot for the life of me understand what drives people to make up and circulate these alarming emails. Sickos.

  • Well spotted Tolsti.

The news item also  referred to matters which were obviously incorrect and alarmist:-

?When the police arrived, they found the man in the back seat of the girl?s car and asked him what he was doing. He replied, he was joining a gang and the initiation to join is to kidnap a woman and bring her back to the gang to be raped by every member of the gang. If the woman was still alive by the time they finish with her then they let her go. According to the police that night, there is a new gang forming here originating from London. The scary part of this is because the guy didn?t have a weapon on him. The police could only charge him with trespassing?. He?s back on the street and free to try again.?

Why would the police have let this man go free when he had admitted to a criminal conspiracy to commit rape and grievous bodily harm?

The police could not possibly have charged the man with trespassing because trespass is not a crime.

  • I think we should now request a Mod to delete this topic in case it is propagated further by people who, quite innocently, believe there to be some substance to it.

  • Regardless of the article being true or false if it has made anyone, especially women, more safety conscious then the article was worth posting.

The world is full of nutters. Daily headline news reports rapes, murders, abductions, violence etc. that do happen.

An email received from one forum member informs me that the same article has appeared on another forum.  I?ve checked it out and below is a few of their comments.

There's nothing wrong with reminding people about using common sense from time to time, but I do hope you don't believe everything you receive on your email - that would be VERY scary

Shouldn't this type of e mail be reported, not sure who to though?

Urban myth or not. If someone can think it up then there is probably some one sick enough to act it out.

It all sounds like very good advice to me especially as I have to go back to England for a while.

  • Reading through "The Paper" I came across another warning - this time warning parents about the dangers of children's chat rooms.  It makes interesting reading. Click this link  http://losgigantes.com/news/?p=253
