Rent A Car Warning !

  • I had a Gentleman in my Office this afternoon, who 20 minutes earlier had rented a Car, from a well known Worldwide Rent A Car Company in a Hotel in Santiago.

On returning to his apartment complex, El Sombrero, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked car. On returning to the Office he found it closed until early evening, so as we were the only Rent A Car office open, he came to us for help.

Desperate to know what to do, we contacted his Company for him to arrange for the cars recovery, as it was undriveable, I then drove him back to his Apartment Complex, gave him the relevant advice on what to do and noticed the car he had hit was also a Rent A Car from another Company, who I rang to inform them of the damage to their car.

What he told me on the way to his apartment made me feel very sorry for him and made me want to warn other Tourists.

The Gentleman concerned thought he was gettin quite a good deal, but his Insurance had an excess. To reduce his excess to NIL he would of had to of paid another 165 euros, on top of the quoted price. He chose not to, as it would of made the rental too expensive for him.

The Result is he now has to pay 700 euros Excess on the policy, because he has damaged the car.

WARNING - When booking what looks like a cheap Rent A Car, Beware of Add on that increase your overall cost.

Which ever Company you use for your Holiday Hire, make sure you have FULL Insurance Cover with No Excess, or gamble on having the possibility of a large bill to pay.

  • Oh dear, these things happen, unfortunately.

Just shows that you need to make sure you have all inclusive insurance and not be ripped off when you arrive on your holiday with the prospect of the extra expense for Insurance upgrades.

Spoke to Martin the other week. I have hired off them a couple of times recently and think he and the gang are doing a great job there. He has taken a relatively small Company and more than doubled it in the space of about a year. He also said several more new vehicles were on the way next month.

Keep up the good work and the Customers will be lining up outside your door.

  • I just wonder, losgiganteskid, how many other Companies would go out of their way to help someone in distress, especially as they were not even one of their customers. Lets take a guess and say NONE !

I did say in my post, WHICH EVER COMPANY YOU USE FOR YOUR CAR HIRE, people have free choice to book with whoever they want. I just pointed out that the reason we are so popular is that we have full No Excess Insurance. As a paid advertiser on this site I could choose to post loads of free advertising, but I Don't !

This man was so gratefull he came back the next day and thanked us all personally, which was very nice of him, and I feel that we would help anyone again in the future, given similar circumstances.

He also informed me that his liability for the accident was 840 euros, because they decided to add local taxes etc on top of his excess........ Nice of them.

I don't think the message boards are the media in which to tout for "free" advertising.  I acknowledge that you pay for your advertising slot, and whilst I also acknowledge that you seem to have gone out of your way to help the gentleman in question - and to inform others of a potential pitfall - it seems to me you were happy to exploit the position.  If you don't agree with me - may I suggest you read your original post again.

  • I don't think I exploited the situation at all. I warned people, with a true case, the pitfalls of hiring a car and not obtaining Full No Excess Insurance.

I also advised Tourists and Locals, that WHICH EVER COMPANY YOU USE FOR YOUR CAR HIRE make sure you get the full Insurance. I never told people to use mine and only mine.

I simply pointed out that Rent A Car Santiago is a Company who includes Full No Excess Insurance with every quote given.

Any Company boss in a similar situation, who did not do this after making the previous statement, would be either an Idiot or bad businessman and I am neither.

Maybe the answer is not to help people in the future, if criticism is all that you get for it ? !

  • A businessman has to take criticism sometimes - may make them a better businessman !

In this case I was certainly not being critical of what you had done to assist the gentlemen in question - merely that you took a step too far to turn someones misfortune into your own good fortune viz a viz a free advert !

  • This was a reasonable and open post by RentaCar Santiago.

What is the bottom line, if you did not have paid advertising on losgigantes.com
and you were another business and had a similar story. You would not be allowed
    to post it?

  • I don?t really see how anyone is disadvantaged by the post from Rent a Car Santiago.

Readers surely benefit from the good advice to beware and make sure that they  understand the extent of their car hire insurance cover and  Rent a Car Santiago benefit from publicising  that their insurance is comprehensive.

The fact that there is some poor guy who made the wrong choice in renting a car with inadequate insurance is rather unfortunate but not the fault of  Rent a Car Santiago. Rent a Car Santiago deserve praise for helping him out, so why shouldn't they publicise their good deeds.

Everyone?s a winner as far as I can see.
