NIE number

  • My son is coming out to Tenerife and hoping to find a job for a few months.  Does he need to get himself a NIE number although he will only be working there for a few months.  If so, what is the quickest way to acquire one?
    Many thanks.

  • It entirely depends on his circumstances, whether a student etc and what type of contract he is offered as to what kind of documentation he will need, but as a rule of thumb yes he will have to apply for an NIE number and also a Social security number, there is no quick way, just go to the Comisaria (National police station nearest to where he will be working) and queue!!!
The Social security number is obtained from Los Crsitianos (in the south)

Some  employer smay help with this process if they really want the employee, but if your son has no Spanish he would be better to take an interpreter with him, or employ a Gestor to process the applications for him - but they will of course charge a fee.

  • Thanks Gigi.  He's a gap year student looking for work in a bar.  Are there many jobs available at the moment?  Would it be better for him to apply for his NIE before he comes out to Tenerife or should he do it once he is there?

  • If it is cash in hand then he won't need an NIE number. If it's going through their books then he will.  Usually you have to have a job before getting an NIE number but you can't get an NIE number unless you have a job (or buying a property etc etc), very rarely do Spanish give contracts as workers have a lot more rights than employers over there. There are tons of websites on this subject.

  • Just so you are clear -  if he doesnt have a contract both he and the employer are liable for HUGE fines, will have no health cover or employers accident or liability cover, most legitimate employers will offer a contract these days although I agree there are still a lot of cowboys out there (see the article on the Angus Steak house chain who have just been busted in the local news section)
