Masca walk for children?

  • Have been coming to Los Gigantes for a few years now and have always been tempted to do the Masca walk (or should I say endurance test from what I've been reading!).  Our son is 11 years old and my hubbie is convinced that this year is the year we do it and that our son should be ok to do it with us.  I'm a little less convinced - or am I being too protective.  Our son is very fit and is a Scout and so used to hiking and scrambling around.  We do all have proper hiking boots etc.  Is there anyone on here with knowledge of the walk that could advise me whether we should even consider this with our son?  We would obviously book up with an organised group from Los Gigantes and not try it on our own.

Maybe I'll just send my hubbie on his own with a camera and enjoy the photos - what do you think!! ;)

Thanks and hope all is well in Los Gigantes - looking forward very much to our annual visit, but got another 4 months to wait until then.  :'(

  • Your son should have no problem coping with it.  We did it with our son when he was 9 or 10.

  • The "Masca Walk" is wrongly named.  It should be the Masca trek or scramble.  It is not so easy for the unfit as there is a bit of climbing in places. Allow around 3 hours and take a snack, plenty of water, a hat and sun tan cream.  You can also enjoy a swim to cool off when you get to the beach.  From what you say your son should have no problem - enjoy and report back to us.l

  • Should be OK on an organised trip.  I can recommend Hiking With Hans.  Hans (English speking) leaves leaflets at the bus stop and around town.  He usually does Masca on Thursday but you should call him and book when you arrive.  Hans will organise transport to Masca, lead the walk and organise the boat trip back.

  • Your son will be fine. We did it with our daughter when she was about the same age and she was like a little mountain goat.  Our problem was me!!!  I was the last of our group and arrived at the beach with ripped trousers after mostly using my bottom to navigate the rocks. It is definitely not a stroll in the park but it is well worth the effort. Enjoy.

  • Thanks for your replies all.  I'm feeling easier that my son will be ok, now a bit concerned whether I will be though!!!  Might leave the boys to it while I catch a few more zzzz's on our balcony with an ice cold glass of vino or 2.  I'll take my boots just in case I change my mind though as I've heard the scenery is worth the hardship of the descent.  Will look out for Hans's leaflets when we get there and book up.
