  • Can anyone throw any light on the closure of Alcala and Playa San Juan Markets?  For those of you who didn't know Alcala market (Mondays) no longer operates and neither does Playa San Juan (Wednesdays and Sundays)

  • Must be a recent change as we went to both in January, and not heard anything about them not operating. Perhaps one of the residents can give us a clue?

  • I haven?t head officially, but the word on the street is the markets have closed because many shop owners are complaining about lack of business due to lost trade to the market.  Outsiders taking the local business!!  Can?t blame them.

However the bar and restaurant owners in San Juan and Alcala are now up in arms because they are now suffering from lack of trade due to the closure of the market! Hmm difficult situation.

Also the road which was used for San Juan market is soon to be opened to traffic accessing the new apartments.

I?m sure if my facts aren?t correct someone out there will correct me.

  • I called the number on the advert for the markets and was advised there is a dispute between the organisers and the Council and that the market would remain closed for "several weeks".  Sounds like another own-goal for the Council.  I thought they would be too busy manufacturing sand for the beach to have time to mess with the market, which must attract dozens of money-spending tourists and provide employment for a lot of locals.  I don't think the shopkeepers can object to the market - after all, markets were in existince long before shops were invented.  Hopefully, normal service will be resumed soon, as we miss the fresh fruit, veg and home produce.

  • Just heard through the grapevine that the Town Council are trying to organise  a weekly market on the Puetro Santiago plaza.

  • Heard on good authority this morning (someone who had a stall on the market has contacted the powers to be) that San Juan market is scheduled to open again in March.  Apparently the licence had expired on both markets, a few things were not in order i.e. tables were not suitable (jagged edges), site dangerous, food on display not being covered etc. Plans are looking for new site maybe Plaza near Altesa supermarket which is quite close to original market site. Perhaps the Puerto Santiago Plaza site is for Alcala market but doesnt make sense to me when the one in Alcala is ideal.
