Legal lets advice.

  • Sorry if I am opening a can of worms here but, how can I find out which accommodation is safe (legal) to rent. I have made enquiries for a month next February, I am reluctant to hand over a 50% deposit to a stranger, only to find out he has cleared off with my hard earned. I have had some very evasive e-mail reply's, especialy from Tamara. I would rather rent a private pad than stay at a tour company place.
Is there a list of tourist lets available online? ie 1 bed pad for 1 month.

  • If you check the Tourist Board they have a listing of legal lettings that have been registered with them.  http://www.webtenerife.co.uk/accommodation/holiday-apartments/ this is for apartments but there is also rural accommodation, hotels, guest houses etc under the main heading 'Accommodation'.

  • Thanks for the help Chiquita, only seems to be the Sombrero listed, (stayed there and split it with poblada marinero) so fancy a change. I am awaiting a few e-mail replies yet, so may have to simply chuck and chance it. without naming names ;) one of them means good view!

  • Do you mean that all the others appartments , the one you can find at ownerdirect for example, are illegal to rent ?

Erm, in short yes! I do not have a problem with this as I know the laws as they stand are crazy, we love Los Gigantes and have been visiting for many years, I have a simple view on life, we book a place , pay the cash and then spend cash in and around the area, which of course helps everyone in the industry. My main fear is to pay a deposit, it go pear shaped and we lose our cash as a result.
To clarify a little, we live on a small island in the Med, a typical charter /package deal is not available to us, we have to book independantly using ferries planes via Madrid/ tenerife north or South. Flights etc we arrange at the last minute, the pad is always booked first, then we slot in the flights, we cannot do Tenerife the same day, it always involves an overnight at Madrid. There is always a great deal of planning involved in our holiday, not as simple as booking a UK cheapo. with reading of the tightening of the letting laws in the Canaries this is causing us far more concern than it used to do. We will still do it, just asking for advice from the locals, and very grateful for it!

Only for short term lets, long term lets (ie minimum of 3 months) are not illegal in these properties
