I love Los Gigantes HOWEVER!

  • Please sort out the noro virus problem. We have just returned from holiday and have all been ill. Its all we heard talked about around the resort. We have been there four times before without any problems. However we will not be returning (choosing Lanzarote instead) unless it is sorted out. This is a shame because we LOVE Tenerife, the Loro Park boat trips Masca walk. However due to illness we could not do any of our favourite activities.  THANKS

  • Shhhhhhhhh, it does not exist, it is a figment of tourists imagination!
Mind you, I have been in Los Gigs for six weeks this winter, did not get it, nor did I hear of anyone that did.Year before was another matter, I won the projectile both ends vomit competition.
The odd thing is, after being told in the past that it was not sewage floating on the sea, I took pictures of it this year in front of the Los Gigs hotel, and I still have them.

  • What do you expect us to do about it. People who are ill on holiday still turn up at restaurants and public places spreading their germs. There are hand cleaning substances that the children have to have in the schools but the general public donīt bother with. Until everyone ups their hygiene standards these things will be around and itīs not just in LG or Tenerife. Good luck in Lanzarote hope they donīt have it too!!!

  • Noro Virus is a truly horrible virus, and one of our friends was struck down over the Xmas holidays and his two week break was totally ruined, BUT he wasn't in L.G. he was in Lanzarote so I am afraid that this illness can strike anywhere.
We have been coming to L.G. now for well over twenty years, and maybe we are just lucky but we have never been sick once whilst there, and that is something I can't say about the UK.
We take all the usual precautions on holiday wherever we are and so far have been OK, however I realise that we could be ill anywhere at any time, these things happen,  but I would not blame the resort we were staying in for it.

  • By that logic it must be the people from LG travelling that have closed hospital wards in the UK and had a couple of cruise ships quarantined since Christmas. Hygiene is mainly the answer as has been proven on cruise ships.

  • Yes, that's right, there is a dedicated team of SWAT folk, who travel round Europe spreading NV wherever they can. They only come back to LG to restock the virus and they're off again, usually flying Ryanair or Easyjet! BEWARE!

Why, what do you think that he would do with them ? he did nothing when the Hotel was all over the internet 2/3 years ago.
Just because you can see the floating sewerage now and then, does not mean that it originates from Los Gig. There is quite a large motor catamaran full of tourists that visits the area most days, not sure but I think it comes from Fanabe area, could it not simply release its holding tanks near to Los Gigs? just a thought.

Take a walk down to the area behind the Hotel Los Gigantes, take a deep breath and let me know if you still think the sewers are not to blame!

I take your point! I notice it still stinks near the Lido/Taxi rank. I had a look at the new pavement Bar opposite, how people could eat and drink there with that niff I will never know :)

  • I agree, Davymar.  As a general rule it is wise not to eat at the Oasis when the sea is rough.  I have several bowling friends and they never play bowls down there when there is sea spray.  This could explain why residents at the hotel suffer from the dreaded virus more than would normally be expected.  Funny how most local people are aware of all this but the council continue to bury their heads in the sand (not a good idea, given the nature of the problem!)

  • Tourism wants all the ''Good Times'' - from the moment the plane arrives at Tenerife South Airport the employment factor connected to tourism kicks in from the staff working at the airport right through to the coach driver/taxi driver who takes you to your resort.  Tourism is the island's biggest money earner and employment provider but when it comes to it what does Tenerife or any other holiday destination give back to the tourist? This is now a serious health issue - no one should have to play an almost Russian roulette style chance of having either a great time on holiday virus free or go down with the dreaded bug/illness which spoils their hard earned holiday and has them vowing never to return again thus impacting on the Canarians' jobs and their livelihoods.   Trip Advisor has yet again more reports of ruined holidays at the Los Gigantes Hotel/Barceló Santiago and at the Luabay and on it goes. It seems its just tough luck if it happens to you on holiday - they've had your money - who cares - the next lot of tourists are on their way over and maybe they'll be ok - San Fairy An.  Well it's not good enough to treat people like that - doctors are constantly called out to these hotels to treat these people so it is not an isolated incident.
We had three fantastic weeks there in January/February this year - lovely sunny weather - no SEA BREEZIES - no illness.      Come the beginning of March and for three days running there were strong winds described as a Tempest and the outcome??   The dreaded virus is back with us again !!

  • It is well documented in these forums my view on the sewage system (or lack of it) in Los Gigantes - some agree some beg to differ.

I have an apartment in LG and have been coming over regularly  for over, well, not wishing to give my age away, lets say a goodly number of years.

There is often a whiff (i'm being very polite and choosy with my words today)  in certain areas around the village - I list them here in no particular order of strength

    1) Near the Lido / Taxi rank on way to beach

2)Opposite the information office just outside Bar Calypso (I have mentioned this in prior forums and been shot down in flames for suggesting this - but its true.  I certainly wouldn't enjoy an eating experience anywhere near that pong - which I admit is not always there but more often than not it is

3)Oasis - again, sitting at the seafront there is often a very unpleasant sewage smell.

As I have said before, you kinda get used to it in and around Los Gigantes - it's what gives the village it's charm.

Having said that - here in the UK we would not put up with such a vile smell, one phone call to the Council and/or health and safety - things would soon be put  right.

I am not aware of this niff, after saying this the Green corner is under new owners and has always been Brits abroad at its worst to me, I don't like the place, each to their own! I used to own a place In Lanzarote in the old part of Puerto del Carmen (years ago) we had a system that involver recycling water, ie your washing up water was stored and used to water the plants, unfortunately the idea was controlled by people who could not organise a pi$$ up in a brewery, so we had an awful niff a lot of the time, could it be possibly related to something similar?

  • I don't know about the washing up water theory - I don't, and never have, been in the Green Corner for a drink.  I'm talking about walking past there - (as the road bends round and you're opposite the church square) - you will see a gap/hole in the wall behind the plants with a pipe thing - it has always stunk of rotten eggs for years.

  • Please do not knock something you have not tried, from my last experience in January the new owner( & I have no idea who he is) was trying very hard to loose that tag & I only visited there once the month we were there.

I have been going to LG for over 20 years & have in fact owned a property since 2000 the smell has been there for that long.

But dont worry with the Tourist Dept and the Government going to change the whole Island into a 5*A/I resort they are going to supply nose pegs when you arrive at the airport

Well done, Dolly.  But if you remember back to the public Council meeting held in the old police station a few years ago, I raised a question about what was going to be done to stop raw sewage being pumped into the sea.  This was after a presentation by the council on all the wonderful new developments that were going to take place over the next five years and I made the point that, although these plans were welcome, surely the health of the community came first.  The mayor, through the councilor and with much finger-wagging, assured us that the problem absolutely DOES NOT EXIST, the water flowing from the "treatment plant" is regularly checked and it meets all the required standards.  Needless to say, nothing has transpired regarding the development plans and raw sewage continues to flow into the sea with all the subsequent health issues.

It will be interesting to see if your communication with the council has any effect but don't hold your breath or, in this case, maybe it would be wise to do so in the vicinity of the "pongs".

  • We were in Los Gigantes in December with no ill effects.

However, in January, back in UK, I caught Norovirus twice.  My daughter, in Greater London, is just now recovering from a bout of Norovirus.  Nowhere is immune from it I'm afraid.

Agreed - the virus can be picked up anywhere - that doesn't alter the fact that in and around the village there are various shall we say "hot spots" where the smell of raw sewage is quite repugnant

I think the two comments above raise valid points, also thanks Dolly for offering to raise the issue to the councillor, the "do so in the vicinity of the pongs" makes a very valid point :) I agree that the virus can be caught anywhere, but make no mistake, if the pongs are in the uk or other European tourist destinations, they would Not be tolerated, they would be investigated and dealt with, burying your head in the sand and total denial would not be accepted. It is not as though these pongs have suddenly appeared is it? they have been conveniently ignored for years!

  • Yes, Davymar - we agree that the problem DOES exist.  Meanwhile the council spends millions on...

New signage all along the road from Adeje, mostly completely meaningless.
A complete set of signs erected a couple of years ago within Los G which were mostly incorrect (unless the church has relocated next to the Royal Sun).
A Cultural Museum near Los Llanos which has never opened.
A desalination plant near Tamaimo which I don't believe has ever been used.
A recreation area behind the police/bomberos, where the only action has been to add a fence around it - I have never seen it being used and it's nowhere near anywhere where people live.
A hotel/equestrian/museum/restaurant complex in Santiago del Teide which opened then closed again.
Dare I mention the TF1 extension?

I appreciate some of these items may not fall within Santiago del Teide's domain, but I believe most do and there are probably others.  If I am incorrect on any of these points, I apologise, but my opinion is shared with many other residents of Los G.

.........but the sewage problem in Los G continues year after year.  Surely it's time to get back to basics!!!
