  • Just received this email from a young man in England.  We are not allowed to mention the name of this Irish establishment, but I'm sure you can all guess.

Well of all the karaoke bars in los gigaties HP wins!!! The people and the atmosphere make it a great night out and when in tenerife we always end up in HP1!  Thankyou to mass as well as he makes the good nights possible for everyone.

  • Surely there has to be better entertainment than BORING KARA-JOKE as most of the systems are out dated and using poor sound equipment but then saying that the singers never have a problem could they be lipsync-ing??? I wonder

But how right i was to bring up this subject as we can see there are alot of disgruntled grockles out there...

  • Karaoke bars are obviously very popular, and certainly not boring to so many people, especially all the youngsters, who DO visit Los Gigantes.  I have personally had many great nights at Fred's Plaice, Eva - Los Gigantes (Saturday nights) and from feedback from others the Karaoke fun nights in this area have made their holiday.

You don't like karaoke? No one is forcing you to visit a karaoke bar! But don't knock it for those who do enjoy it.  As I keep saying this area has something for everyone.

  • Now at the grand old age of 35 my husband and i have decided to go elsewhere next year (as i said on a previous post). I agree with a lot of the comments made - 1 decent lively bar would not ruin the place. I know a lot of the residents are retired but LG is not an old people's home just yet!!
I started coming to LG as a teenager when the place had a perfect mix of young and old people and there was always something to do. Clowns bar - where young people could go for a dance (now O'Neills i think) The piano bar in the harbour and another one up by Sinatras (can't remember name). Our family apartment is quite close to the town centre and if we had an early night we couldn't hear the noise form these places as they were indoors.
If it continues like this LG will be just a retirement village and visitors will  stop coming altogether.
Can't remember who said it, but totally agree with the post about 'entertainment' I'm sure Baz etc are all very nice people but how many times can you listen to "sweet caroline?" aaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!

  • This is my first post, so be gentle with me! Have been watching though for a long time now. Very interested to read all the comments and feel that you lot are missing the point!

We are going back to LG for the fourth time on 10th July and always stay at.....dare I say it, LG Hotel! The place is clean, the food is good, the staff polite, views great and the best bit of all, NO KIDS!  (We've done all that!) We only use the hotel to sleep  and eat in after all and lounge around the pool in the day. Granted entertainment at the Hotel is rubbish and the kissing waiters make me squirm, that aside.... Easy Living. All we want is a nice relaxing holiday as we are both in high pressure jobs. We are not old farts or numpties,  we just love the place.

if you think the hotel staff are being polite then you don't speak Spanish then?.if you did you would know different.we have been coming to los gigs for 14 years and yes i have stayed at the hotel in the past. it's just that a bar that stays open after 2am would be very welcome.we are both in are 40's and not old farts or numpties either but we don't want to be tucked up in bed with a cup of cocoa either.we spend enough time in bed in the afternoons.

  • Payney Janey this subject has only highlighted the poor facilities, restaurants (NOT MANY GOOD ONES) choice of bar, bar prices, and all round lack of entertainment for teenagers and older grockles using LG as a holiday destination
The point on kararoke is that surely that there must be something better than this form of entertainment as WEEDS says how many more times do people have to ruin such a classic by Neil and dare i say Elvis..

PLAYSTATION BARS for kids Keeps them amused and out of view

KARAOKE - from the Japanese, meaning empty (or void) orchestra

FRED's PLAICE - on a Saturday Night (or any other for that matter)

  • No we won't abandon LG completely but will probably give it a miss for a few years until things pick up! With 1 little one and another on the way we will only be able to take the one holiday each year and just fancy somewhere with a bit more going on - we don't mean loud clubs or anything just somewhere you can go out in the evening and see a bit of life! Such a shame because we really love LG and have years of happy memories. My parents have had their apt for nearly 20 yrs and are (young!) 70 yr olds. Even they have booked to go to 2 completely different places this year.

  • Hi All ive been reading this page on and off to see whats going on. After living here for 14 years I have noticed the gradual decline of tourism, and the closing of various bars, restaurants, resorts, its very sad.
The locals here are dependent on tourism for work, and I must admit some of them need a lesson in communication. I dont know what happened to "Tenerife amable"  Friendly Tenerife, it seems to have fallen away.
However the price of flights, alongside the price of apartments, isnt doing us any favours either. Some of the Tour companies are offering all inclusive for half the price !
YES ! We need more life in this area, more bars catering for families, more entertainment, but firstly we need the tourists !!!
Maybe the Tenerife Cabildo should take a new look once again at the tourism plans, and push the canary islands once again.

We will all be out of jobs, if there are no sales, no tourists, but it needs to start here with the Tourism industry whipping the personal into shape, training them on customer relations, thats what counts, thats what makes people remember your bar, restaurant, hotel.

I start work on monday in Las Americas !!!

Hi Nikki, congrats on your new job! You are right about the cost of flights, I cant even get 'a3300 rent for two weeks in Las Rosas so its going to be empty again this year (I will be staying at El Marques instead) I think the problem is really to do with the aging populace of Los G, both residents and timeshare owners alike.
We saw it first at Las Rosas, the older people complaining about the noise from the bar. Its now starting at El Marques, last year some old guy stood in front of the entertainers with a decibel meter shaking his head. I told him if he didnt like it he should b****r off back where he came from (I got a round of applause for that!) Sadly, I think there will be more and more of these sad old gits spoiling it for the rest of us.

  • Hey Apple. Ignore all the negative posts, if you enjoy staying at the LG hotel (as we do, for the same reasons as you) don't let anybody put you off. Quite simply, if you like LG, keep coming and ignore the bickering.

  • Thanks to all my wellwishers ! Leigh, alex and Royl.

Im starting at club la costa as a receptionist in adeje. Its not ideal but its a job, and helps pay the mortgage !!! I didnt even consider anything in this area, as it seems to be loseing the plot ! business is V bad, no one selling, staff having hours dropped, its hapeening in all the businesses around Santiago del Teide.

The thing is with the oldies they keep coming back, and they are a very good source of income to shops, bars, restaurants. Not all of them are "sad old gits" as Alex said. The majority are still young at heart, and like a good time, obviously this warrents entainers who appeal to their age group, and good on em !
To appeal to younger families, this area needs more attractions, but whose going to pay for this ? Maybe the local council should take a look at the problems !!!
And someone PLEASE tell me ! where are the buyers coming from for all this new building work ??? The buildings that are in obvious distress for example the Green corner area, the Concanassa buildings, whats going on there ???

  • The most important thing that most of you who slag off timeshare is that without it Tenerife would not be as developed as it is. People who bought their two weeks because they could not afford to buy their own property. Also Tenerife and all the other Timeshare hotspots provide an income for locals oh and yes all the bars and so called restaurants would have no customers??

  • You know Seb, I think you have an arguable point.

If you were to draw up a list of Los Gigantes' problems, then  lack of visitors would be right up at the top and timeshare salesmen would be down at the bottom.

Timeshare is a good way of  persuading people to return. Unfortunately, it has a bad press because of high pressure sales techniques. But anything that gets people to return must be a good thing  considering the major problems associated with low visitor numbers.

  • Lack of accomodation is probably LG's biggest problem. Since the demise of places like Royal Sun, Diamond etc, there are only so many places left around LG that people can stay. Don't forget, its those places that feature in travel agents brochures that get the family business these days.  LG hotel doesn't cater for them, and loads of people don't feel comfortable renting a private (or small company) apartment and doing their own transfers.

Timeshare is not a solution, in many cases it's a problem. RESPONSIBLY sold, its marginally acceptable, but being pestered on holiday every 30 yards by a different spotty youth gets pretty annoying after a while. The good side for LG is that it has limited appeal for the intense marketing some places suffer.

As for work in the area, without tourists spending money, businesses suffer, and locals have to travel further and further away for work (thats if they can even afford accomodation in the surrounding area in the first place) :o ???
