  • Thank you all for the compliments.  It was really upsetting to see it all first hand.

Latest on Masca see news at top of page.

Our original footage of the fires at night has had 9,200 viewing on youtube already. Has 3 honors, 5 links and favoured 12 times.  People to like drama.

A request to you all.  Let the people of Masca have a day or two to recover from their ordeal before they are inundated with curious tourists. Several of them were upset last night that the police had opened the road.

  • Dolly just like others, i would like to thank you and your team for keeping us informed of all the developments during, the week, it helped  to reasure people who have family and friends who live in the affected areas.

Also like to second your request about visitors going to Masca, the last thing these people need at this tragic time is the village just full of curious visitors causing more distress, after the terrible ordeal they have had.

  • I should like to join all the other regulars in thanking the team for all the updates and videos.

While I was back in the UK, my husband and two companions, became surrounded by the fires as they drove down from Teide on Monday afternoon. They were extremely lucky to get away with their lives as fire enveloped them on all sides and temperatures in their car rose to a roasting 55 degrees C.

By skillful driving on twisty roads, battling the very high winds and with visibilty poor because of smoke, my husband managed to reach the safety of the coast.

We are now reunited in the UK, relieved that no one was killed, but saddened by the news that homes have been destroyed. Grateful thanks must go to all those who risked their own lives to battle the flames.

  • Environment Minister Cristina Narbona has said that fires on Tenerife and Gran Canaria had ravaged 42.5  square miles  of land instead of the 135 square miles initially estimated by local government authorities.

The fires blackened 31 square miles of land on Grand Canaria and 11.5 square miles on Tenerife.

Hardly good news but significantly less bad than originally thought.

Just made it into Masca. As you descend into the valley the air is heavy with the smell of burning patches of undergrowth, which is typical of fires that are started by wind driven embers from fires elsewhere. Some patches are bad but all will recover. The inhabitants were a little hostile it has to be said, but who can blame them, three days they have been fighting to save the village. A local who would speak to us told us that no lives had been lost, but that six houses had been destroyed or damage, the restaurant that does the lemon juice has been hit badly, the vegetation in this once lush valley has been severely scorched, much will recover quickly, however many trees will bare the scars of the fires for a number of years. The best you could say is ldblquote damaged but not destroyeddblquote  this beautiful village hopefully will soon be back on its feet.

A 15 year old boy has been arrested in La Quinta on suspicion of arson.

Three roads are still cut off to traffic: TF38 Boca Tauce-Ch'edo, TF344 Icod el Alto-La Guancha and  TF436 Buenavista- Santiago del Teide via Masca from km 0 to km 22. The following roads are now open: Erjos-Tamaimo, Ch'edo-Santiago del Teide and La Caldera-Portillo.

The President has requested that the general public should refrain from travelling to the affected area whenever possible as it will only hamper serious work that still needs to be completed.

I echo the thanks from this sites users Doll for the info and updates.

The reference to the 15 yr old who has been arrested on suspicion - I hope the Spanish authorities are a little more tuned in to the publics wishes than they are over here in the UK - insofar that in the UK if convicted he would get a severe telling off by the do-gooders brigade - instead of a damn good thrashing !!

The Masca walk is closed until further notice until the wooden bridge, which was damaged in the fire has been repaired.
