    Thanks  LaCochinillo.

The tip of the iceberg? Prior to the credit crunch many of Tenerife's hotels were up for sale. The impact of the credit crunch
    could be absolutely catastrophic.

  • Who would buy this Hotel so near to the coastline? Only a fool must be the answer.

This could be just the prelude to eventual closure...

  • Reading this article, it suggests the Barcelo Varadero will also be put up for sale!

  • At least that is off the Coastline.

They are more likely to want to expand their international operation
in areas where there is less competition and new build Hotels.

Not that this helps the immediate area of Hotel Barcelo Santiago.

Barcelo Varadero is more out of any commercial area.

  • i think you'll find that everything is up for sale at the right price during the worldwide credit crunch!!!  not just barcelo group, sol melia, iberotel, sheraton all the hotels will be up for sale - if the price is right......

could just do with the los gigantes hotel selling - and changing its directive within the town..... open it up to familys, not all full board either.....  that would help!

  • I find it worrying that it is up for sale given the recent revamp! I also know a few of the waiters there who live in Puerto Santiago/Playa Arena who will be worried for their futures. I would hate to see a repeat of the Royal Sun!

  • Just how popular would Hotel Los Gigantes be without its 'regulars'?

For many it would be seen as past its sell-by date and a wonderful
location for films set in the 60's or early 70's (or is that the entry age).

It would be interesting to know how much life is left in the concrete,
given the lack of technology when it was built.

LOL, I think Orange meant if in future anyone wanted to make a film based in the 60's/70's, the hotel would be ideal!! It does need something doing to it though, and the family oriented one is good, as that is what is was when LG was thriving.

  • The latest strategy for tourism on Tenerife has emphasised the need to improve demand from countries other than the UK, Germany and Spain. In the last quarter of 2008, foreign tourists  fell by  7% and domestic tourists by 28%. The big tour operators met with the big hotel chains earlier in the year to try to negotiate discounts because of falling demand and currency movements. The big tour operators have a strangle hold on  the hotel chains to the point where many are no longer viable at the prices paid  by the tour operators. Hence the  government strategy to  diversify into other markets.

And as for the Los Gigantes Hotel, it has found a winning strategy with Thomson Gold holidays (no screaming kids). The hotel is the most popular hotel in Thomson Gold range. Why a change a winning formula which has such a  high return rate  and rate of return. They know their business better than anyone -  what works and what doesn't.  Why copy the strategy of the Barcelo Santiago when that hotel is up for sale because it is unprofitable?

  • Falstaff, I agree with all you say re:tour operators/Thompsons, but unfortunately their gain is LG's loss. I really think LG needs some quality hotel accomodation for families. Barcelo is not in LG. Yes, only a short walk, but neverthless not in LG.

  • this brings the circle back round to ...... "what can be done to develop tourism within los gigantes?"..... i still think the marina shouldnt have cars driving up and down it, let the restaurants pull their tables out to the front line, make it pretty!!   then the flim crews can make up to date films too!!!  -  ;D :D ;)

  • If and when it was sold. You would certainly see the removal
    of the Barcelo Brand.

At the beginning of Brown's unregulated toxic credit chaos,
The Barcelo Brand was dragged down by the announcement
that its UK Hotel operation had gone into administration.

This was not correct as such, but the attachment  of such
    stories would have affected them.

Only a small private and expanding Hotel Group willing to
chance coastline laws would take it on...

  • in a nutshell, it is up for sale.  not sold as yet.  i am sure if you are booked in for the future, all bookings will be honoured if it is sold.  that is normally the case.

  • ?We can only hope that these hotels are sold to a company which does not offer fully inclusive holidays! but that?s probably too much to wish for.? -Dolly Diver.

Well, my hope is that whoever buys the hotels offers tourists what they want, because if they don't they  will suffer the same fate as the Royal Sun. Luxury accommodation and self catering do not go well together. People who want 4 and 5 star  holidays want all inclusive, full board or half board accommodation. And the current exchange rate strengthens that demand.  I think many  people are looking for all inclusive deals at the moment because of the dramatic increase in food and drink costs. There are some really good deals out there at the moment so switching to self catering holidays at this time is not a good idea.

  • totally disagree with the last post.  i think people are switching from hotels due to the cost of drinks etc . i think people are looking at luxury self catering with the option of eating out some of the week and eating in some of the week.  in a nice apartment you can choose good wine etc to drink, and all at much cheaper prices! i think these same people dont go for all inclusive hotels where they are herded around for every meal, all buffets, all recycled food, hot meat day one, cold in a salad day 2!!!

fortunatly, everyone does not want the same type of holiday, but i do think that people will always need/take an annual holiday, and they will cut their cloth to suit.  self catering is a great option,  which is a very flexible option in this climate!

  • Most Hotels in previous years were quietly acquired. Normally as additions to an established group, or as other equity investment.
The only public announcement was when the deal was done.

There is also a balance of running costs and while the Royal Sun may have closed for different reasons.
It has remained closed with no takers.

Could at least one of the Barcel? Hotels be closed with ?no takers?? The sale having been made so public.

As for cutting their cloth to suit, to many that means no holiday or certainly not one abroad (in the Pound
    for a Euro Zone).

A few days snatched here and there for the sake of the children.  But those who still have a job (and can afford it)
will be looking for value and a break. To most cooking and shopping is not part of that break.

Not to mention that the credit to have holidays is just not that easily available now or when it is, more expensive.

  • I much prefer self-catering, especially with 3 kiddies!!! But as Janey said, many people like myself want 4* facilities without the tie of meals. I don't mind the B&B option which is what you get in Egyptian 4/5* hotels(real Egypt, not the Red Sea!), as that leaves you free for the rest of the day to come and go instead of being tied for meals. We prefer to eat local foods in local real cafes/roadside stalls as that way you know you are helping out the country, not lining the TO's pocket!! Plus it's nicer than the same-old-same-old buffets tend to offer, no matter how posh the hotel.

AI to me is only a good idea in places where it necessary for security reasons, or in very remote hotels.

  • Barcelo Group manage and lease more Hotels then they own.

It would be interesting to know what the status of these two Hotels
were. I would expect that the Santiago would be leased.

It is also interesting from the original article about this sale to read
the comments and feelings about concrete and the coastline! Even
down to government money building them etc.

Out of all the Hotels in the World on the Barcelo Group Website,
there are some changing imagines that showcase their Hotels
(on the front page). One is the view of Los Gigantes from the Hotel.

I certainly would not book privately at this stage. Who would want
their money back a week before they went sort of thing.

  • We are booked for 2 weeks from 15th May.
It Will probably be our 10th visit to this hotel.
We are quite concerned as we have had previous holidays ruined because of various things at the last minute --------changes of ownership--hotel next door being demolished--hotel being upgraded---building work.

The cost for us to go the Barcelo for last Christmas was so expensive that we went to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks and our Barcelo holiday in May costs the same as for Christmas.   :-\\

Should we still carry on with our booking?  Not paid for it yet.     ???
