  • At around six thirty last night there was the smell of wood smoke in the air. We feared the worst but the vening passed without any further concern. It could have difted in on the wind from La Palma I suppose or it could have been a pizza oven starting up. The thing is given the current weather conditions you just do not know when fire will get a hold.

    Forest fire 'deliberate'
A fire that broke out late last night (29.7.09) in the hills outside Santa Cruz was started deliberately says the fire brigade. The blaze was detected just before 10pm in the Anaga area and units were dispatched quickly to the zone for fear that it would spread to the dense surrounding woodlands.
It was brought under control within a few hours although fire fighters are continuing in the area to dampen the hillside to prevent the wind rekindling the embers. The island's Cabildo says it is the third to hit Tenerife in recent days.
