Fern the Boxer

  • I regret to inform you all that Fern the younger of Berts two boxers has this evening gone to join him.  It has been a very sad evening for all of us.  She had bone cancer and the prognosis was not good at all.  She had been suffering since she had a biopsy about two weeks ago and  her life had become intolerable.  Its very sad for me  because I have already lost a best friend and this is my second to go and also Sadie has the big C and has had 5 operations but still runs around like a two year old.  She is also a good friend!

Weare having Fern cremated and in about a months time we will scatter her ashes around Berts area and seat and I hope that she is with Daddy Bertie now!  Also we will have a plaque added to his seat in rememberence!

    Regards Alison xxx

  • I am so sorry to hear of Ferns passing but I feel that she is now keeping Bert happy walking one of his girls. Mr Grumpy is still looking forward to seeing Sadie and joining her for a stroll in the barranco our thoughts are with you, Sadie and your family. All our love

  • On reading this post, I am wondering if Bert and his boxers would have been the person we would see each morning strolling his dogs down from the Crab Island area to the small cove below.  We stay in the Harbour Club and would see him most mornings and watch for a while whilst he threw sticks and made them stay and come to him.  I think they were two boxers but couldn't be certain as from a distance.  Funny thing is that we didn't see him the last time so this makes me think it probably was.

I am very sorry to hear the sad news as a dog lover myself but pleased to hear that you are thinking of a suitable resting place.

  • Bert was indeed the person whom you would have seen from the Harbour Club walking the girls down the barranca for the last 10 year.  If you are a regular visit to the HarbourClub you would remember Bert on the door there working for Alan and Tina for 7 years pulling people in at night!!!  Sadly Bert died on the 5th April this year but many of you autumn visitors will remember him.  Youmay like to walk in the gardens beside the leisure centre to Crab Island and you will see the new seat which has been erected in his honour recently.  This is on-route to where he took the girls every day and since its inauguration only a few weeks ago it is a popular spot for people to sit and rest to and from Los Gigantes!  Fern was the younger of the two though she always looked the older one being bigger and grey in the muzzle.  Sadie is very quiet today and Fern was her baby which we got for her for her first birthday.  She is not eating well for a while now but tomorrow I shall be flashing about to find some new food to tempt her.  Sadie is also not a well girl having had 5 operations for tumors.  Thats life as they say.  Thank you for your kind comments and i is nice for me to hear from lots of you visitors here who knew my Bertie and the girls who were a daily feature here in the village!!!    I hear that my dog walkers are meeting you all and getting a lot of waves from you in a morning!!!

Thank you so much for your response.

I am so sorry to learn that it was indeed the person we so often watched from the Harbour Club.

We will visit the bench on our next visit in February and think it a very fitting memorial for Bertie.

I hope that Sadie picks up soon and enjoys whatever doggy years she has left.

    Best wishes to all.

  • Thank you Blaggers for your kind message which I and my daughter really appreciate.  There were many people such as yourselves whom Bertie met and waved to during the morning walks whom I never met nor knew your names (as he invirably did so either).  Bertie wasan insitution here with his girls every morning.  You say you are here in February.  Will that be at Carnaval time?  If so then I would beinterested in meet you! xxx
