  • Have been using with no problem Nationwide CC in Mercadona, Petrol Station, Lidl etc but when trying to use in three different restaurants the card has not been accepted. Have rung Nationwide (no use) anybody else experienced anything like this around here?

  • Have used my Nationwide card every year without trouble but they have changed a number of their CC types.  Will find out soon as I arrive tomorrow for a couple of weeks and will try to use it.  I always carry a backup card in case of this sort of thing

  • Did you notify Nationwide that you were going to be here?  My credit card issuers all insist on being advised, otherwise they may refuse the card if used outside the UK.

  • Yes, I've let them know prior to coming out the only difference this time seems that N/Wide are now using Mastercard instead of Visa, wouldn't be so puzzled if we had the same problem everywhere but it seems the more we spend the better chance of it going thru. The only common thing at moment is the hand held terminals in the restaurants all were issued by Caja Canarias. Now making sure we've got cash as well as card just in case.

  • Hi I was in LG las week and had exactly the same problem with a Nationwide credit card in a restaurant. I contacted NBS via e mail but did not see their reply until I got home. Basically they said nothing wrong with my card, no block etc but clearly there must be a problem, beware. I just used cash for the rest of the break as did not want the red face again on rejection.

  • Tell the restaurant owners that it's their machine and not your card that's faulty and that you don't have cash....you'll be amazed at the difference this makes.

  • Spot on Amibovvered!

Used the card three more times with no problems spending at least 50 - 100 euros each time. Next restaurant OK then another restaurant bounced it!

Wife took over and told them we had no cash and we'd come back tomorrow, surprise surprise another terminal appeared and it worked straight away!!

  • Interesting and I can see the point if they want cash from all but I was aware of a few other card transactions from diners nearby that went thru ok!! Will heed the advice when back soon.
