Car hire at the airport

  • For the last 3 years we've booked our hire car online via the TFS airport link and we always seem to end up with the same car hire supplier (who are based at the airport).  They're cheap and have okish cars, but they have LOADS of hidden extras - which we're wise to now, but it is annoying and the last thing you want to haggle about when you've just landed.  My pet hate hidden extra is the car full of fuel and return empty - with a huge mark-up for the cost of the fuel, which you can buy for half the price at the garage close to the airport.  Even though we do a lot of travelling around when we visit, we find it impossible to use all the fuel, so they end up making loads of money off us (and everyone else no doubt!).  I've had enough of this particular supplier and want to book with someone else.

I wondered if anyone on here has experience of and could recommend a more honest car hire supplier who is a bit more up front about extras and doesn't have the ridiculous rip-off full/empty fuel policy and hidden expensive insurance costs.  We would want to collect at the airport and return to the airport at the end of our holiday. As we have a young child with us, we don't want the hassle to be taken offsite to complete paperwork both times and so it would need to be one of the suppliers with an office in the arrivals hall.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

    Cheers

  • I always use auto reisen. All insurance is included, and you just return it with the same amount of fuel as you get it with.

  • If you use Auto Riessen and the price goes down you can cancel for free and re-book at the lower price. I've always been satisfied with the cars and there is no insurance excess.

  • I would agree with the above, Autoreisen is very simple , what they qoute on line is what you pay, also you can have 2 extra drivers for no extra charge, just e mail them and take the reply with you and show it at the desk. We used to use record but their prices got seriously out of hand . I think you will find autoreisen hard to beat . Have a good holiday.

  • I always use Tamay rent a car operating from the El Sombrero apartments in LG.

However, last year we wanted another vehicle as some friends of ours came out to Tenerife with us with their 2 small children.  We read about Autoreisen from these forums and they did indeed offer us a very good price for the hire.

When we arrived at the airport we were told that we had been given an upgrade (so far so good) - the car we had been upgraded to albeit a larger car (think it was a blue Ford estate) could only be described as a well used neglected vehicle.  I don't think there was a panel on the vehicle that didn't have a scratch or a dent, the passenger door mirror had been damaged and repaired with sticky tape and although the car was not old it had certainly seen better days and if this was an upgrade I shudder to think of what our chosen car would have been like.

I believe that when we arrived at their airport desk they saw that the family who were to have the car consisted of two adults and two young children and gave us a car that they knew would or could be on the receiving end of some heavy use, pushchairs etc.

In any event it didn't really bother us as it turned out to be reliable and being an estate meant we could use the space to its full advantage.

The moral being - if when you arrive at Autoreisen desk at the airport and they utter those immortal words "you have been given an upgrade" - don't get too excited.

  • Thanks everyone - really helpful replies.

I've had a few quotes now from different companies and have just checked with AutoReisen..... they are ?60 cheaper for the same car than the other cheapest quote I got (and was about to book with).  I like their fuel policy - much more honest.  Plus I like the fact they don't want paying up front like most of the others and they won't charge my credit card until I pick the car up, in fact they don't even take the card details on the internet.

Bit concerned about the report above about the poor car condition on that occasion, but it can't be worse than the 'heap' we were offered last year, paid through the nose for and had to wait 2 hours for it to be ready (ready!!?? it hadn't even been cleaned).

Off to book up with AutoReisen.

  • We've been using Autoreisen for several years now because their prices are comparatively very good, no hidden extras, and their internet service efficient. Never had any problems, have had free upgrades on a couple of occasions and cars were fine, and one breakdown which was dealt with in a professional way. It's also useful being able to pick up and/or drop vehicles off in Americas and bus back to the LG area if you're not having a hire car for the whole holiday.

Used to use hire car companies local to the LG area without realising how expensive they are!

  • You will be fine Caroline - since my experience last year  - 3 other members of my family have been to LG and rented through Autoreisen all had nice clean cars which were  no problems at all.  If you are offered the blue Ford Estate as an "upgrade" ask how much cheaper it will be than the car you originally booked !!   :-* ;D :-*

In any event my reference to Tamay does not really apply as your original post related to "Car hire at the airport"

  • Car all booked up with the greatest of ease on their website and is confirmed at ?60 cheaper than my cheapest other quote.  So all's good and thanks again for the advice everyone.

I promise to beware of tempting upgrades in the form of a blue Ford estate car  ;)

Feels like the time to be back where I love to be is coming closer now that I've booked the car up - I can hardly wait!!!  So excited.

  • I always used to use Record rent a car who were fine but they have now been taken over by GOLD... All I can say is DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!! Their hidden charges are absolutley rediculous!!! Having carried out some research the only other car company I found that seemed competative apart from auto reisen was CI Cars (canary island cars) although I have not been back to LG yet to use them, not sure if anyone else has had experience or CI cars?

    Good luck with auto reisen!

  • Hi Eddie - I didn't mention in my first message the company I have used that I am fed up with, now that you've also mentioned them, I will too.  It was Goldcar - and I completely agree with all you say, they were complete rip off merchants!!  Fingers crossed that Auto Reisen will be a much better experience.  I've heard mostly good things about them - both on here and elsewhere on the internet - they certainly won't have to work too hard to be an improvement on the other lot!!

  • Hi just want to say I've been using Renta car Santiago for years and they are always good and honest, not sure if they are the cheapest but they are friendly and helpful, and the cars are in good condition.
