Boat accident off Los Gigantes

  • At around 3pm this afternoon a motor cruiser with 4 passengers on board was caught in high waves off the Lido, Los Gigantes.

Eye witnesses claim that the 4 people jumped and swam out to sea, when a large wave swept the boat onto the rocks.  Further waves quickly destroyed the boat and it sank.

The 4 who jumped were  picked up by jet skis.  Three appeared ok and were taken by ambulance to hospital.  The 4th was still being resuscitated 45 mins later.

  • What a terrible thing to happen.  Mind you, a motor cruiser really should not be going out in those conditions.  I hope everyone is OK and please keep us informed.

  • Sorry to hear that, I imagine they may have had engine trouble and got driven toward Lido. Hardly any passengers or crew wear a life jacket or buoyancy aids from I have seen over the years there. Overhear their now taken for granted, like wearing a seat belt in a car. Hope all turns out well.

  • Hope the survivors of this accident are in recovery. Is there any news on the occupants of the boat?and who they were.
I agree with the previous observations about safety equipment being used on many boats leaving LG
over the years I have watched many many people leave without life jackets on.Maybe this may bring about a change in the regulations.

  • There's some info on another forum I saw a moment ago. - 50 year old Belgian from Adeje, who is the owner and experienced skipper of the yacht has died. Another is still in critical condition. The other 2 are ok but still in hospital. The boat sailed down yesterday from Puerto Colon.
