Blot on the landscape

  • Does anyone know anything about the enormous Aerial that has appeared on top of the apartment above Paul Ruanes Estate Agency? I can only presume it is a Radio Ham. This is a blot on the landscape or should I say "Seaview". Do you need permission to put a monstrosity like this up in the middle of a Village which we are all proud of.
It is probably not an eyesore to everyone but if we let one person get away with spoiling the lovely views we have over the cliffs and Atlantic what next will happen?

  • I've been told, but not officially that everyone in Spain has the right to communicate and yes he is entitled to this aerial.  I agree it is an eyesore, lets hope everyone doesn't follow suit.

  • Any chance of a photo of the mast. We are not at home at the moment.

How sad a question is that?

  • I have just come home from a night at my friends where I was horrified to see this monstrosity from their terrace. It completely ruins their view of the harbour and the cliffs. I cannot believe they do not need official permission to erect such a thing. It is awful and is most certainly a blot on the landscape. How can anyone with a love of Los Gigantes be so uncaring as to erect such a thing. It would even be better if it was a crane, at least that might have been doing something useful for a short while or long as the case may be. Why if everyone has a right to do this are some communities stopping residents from erecting dishes for receiving TV stations on sky???? This thing is huge and ugly. Somebody must be able to get this thing off our wonderful landscape, the tourists must hate the view from their terraces now. By how we need the tourists to keep coming back, this village is killing itself.

  • Those affected need to get proper advice from proper sources.

Perhaps we can have a few images of the blot and views.

  • Thank you Chrissi for your comments I agree with everything you say. I personally would like to speak to someone in authority but I have got to go back to England later this week. I have taken some photos and will upload them when I can over the weekend. I like you Chrissi cannot believe that people can put up such an eyesore in area that is so beautiful (or anywhere) this person obviously has no consideration for other people. I can understand if it does not affect you, you will not be bothered but be aware that a monstrosity could be put up near you soon if this one is not stopped.

  • A similar thing happened in our street two or three years ago with the erection of a 3 meter dish on a roof opposite.  We and the neighbours all got together and raised denuncias at the police staion.  Two hours later the police were there taking pictures and the dish was gone next day and has never reappeared.  So it does seem that there is some legislation against the erection of large aerials.

  • I understand that there is a right in European law to freedom of information but I cannot believe that this creates an  absolute and unrestricted  right to erect any size of communication device anywhere regardless of environmental impact.

If you are concerned about a  dish development you should contact the  town hall or your local councillor.  I recall that the local council made an edict a year or so ago requiring their permission (and fees) for virtually all  types of minor structural alterations.

Also, does the mast transmit as well as receive radio signals as there may be additional regulations relating to health and safety issues?

The link below would indicate communications dishes are regulated in parts (and maybe all)  of  Spain

  • Having looked at the aerial today I would suggest that the owner is a radio ham (amateur). He will be able to transmit and receive throughout the world. Strict international rules apply so as not to interfere with  receiving other signals.

  • Here it is. It is low profile and not so much of a blot.

  • Looks to me like it is no worse than many of the tv receiving masts on top of houses and apartments throughout the area, nor any worse than the proliferation of 3 metre satellite dishes adorning patios, terraces and roofs so as to enable everyone to keep up to date with Corrie.

It is an amateur receive/transmit Yagi and yes, the user will have a licence.

  • Not wishing to upset anyone nor the reason for this post  due to this Antenna, but just to advise that one of these, (only worse ) was erected in Playa de la Arena a few years ago, ( roughly 16 ) and was an absolute eyesore to say the least. This was on a Community, and despite the effort put in to the Ajuntamiento, police by both Community administrators, owners, this antenna is still there today.
These are normally put up by locals who will have a Licence and local permission.
You may as well get over it as I would put money on the fact that all the displeasure you may have, This will be there to stay.   Sorry but all us foreigners don't have much of a chance to beat locals.  These Antennas are quite common both here and UK, and are no worse than large 3 metre dishes.

  • Thanks for posting the picture. It is not as bad as I thought it was nevertheless it is not pretty!

It looks like a serious piece of kit.

I will investigate the ownership of it as soon as I can although I doubt if I could do anything about it alone.

Perhaps Councillor Stephen McKenna is your man to act but don't hold your breath!

  • JB is absolutely correct!
I know the owner who erected this aerial 16 years ago. At the time he obtained a license and permission from the Town Hall.
Each year at the AGM the Community tries (unsuccessfully) to legally have it removed.

There is also a much larger aerial on a private property on the punta south of Playa Arena beech.

Look on the bright side...........it could have been a 3m dish!
