It's been a bit temperamental recently, particularly before 9 pm.  But with this beautiful weather I am personally not bothered! We had absolutely no problems from last October through to April this year.  Assuming you are with CTSI, why not give them a call and ask them to come out and tweak your antenna.  There are some areas where it can never work reliably due to interupted line-of-sight to Gomera, so this could be your problem.

  • Hi Larsson, I agree the CTSI situation seems unreliable since we returned 10 days ago.  However, we also have a satellite dish (1.2 metre) and Sky box.  We don't have a Sky subscription but brought our Sky Freesat card out with us this time.  We now receive ITV 1 on satellite, but unfortunately none of the other ITV or BBC channels.  At least we can watch Downton Abbey without interuption, except by 20 minutes per hour of commercials!  Maybe someone else can advise if it's possible to receive BBC on satellite with a 1.2 metre dish.  The other alternative is filmon.com via the internet.  This gives you all the channels you could wish for, and possibly some you wouldn't, for a subscription.  If you have an up-to-date PC and TV you can connect the PC to the TV and watch on the big screen, however you do need a reliable internet connection of 2 MBPS or more and even then it freezes occasionally.  There are also cunning ways to get BBC and ITV iPlayer and download programmes to watch later, but that's another story.

  • BBC iplayer can be accessed on the internet anywhere in the world.
I have a small program installed on my laptop, it's called Expat Shield. This free program assigns your
I.P. address to a London provider and as a result the iplayer is not aware that you are watching in Tenerife. I only turn it on when about to watch the iplayers.

A tip for watching live BBC on iplayer without temporary freezes is to switch to the lower bandwidth, this option button is located in the bottom left corner of the iplayer page.

P.S. ITV+1 can be recieved on a 90cm dish, BBC interactive can be accessed via the red button on
the BBC news channel, this is good for watching live Formula 1 races and practice, also other live events
such as the forthcoming 2012 Olympics

P.P.S. All internet streamed football matches are available free on FirstRow football stream.
All other channels can be viewed free at hackedcabletv.com. but you do need a stable broadband connection, as there is no lower bandwidth option for these.

I think you will find that this has changed (as of the 26 sep) BBC news 24 has now moved to Astra D, you CAN still get the red button and F1 etc, but you need a seperate digi box to pull it in.
I could be wrong re Los Gigantes, I do not live in the UK, I recieve free to air using a Sky box, bbc, red button we lost last week, you can get it on the same Astra 28.2, but the interactive (red button) channels come up as seperate channels now.
Not trying to be clever, this is the problem we have to overcome in our location.

Thanks Knightrider.  The ExPat Shield download worked perfectly and I was able to access BBC iPlayer.  The only problem is that I could then not access my normal home page on the internet, i.e. Google.co.uk.  The "Search Result" search engine installed when I installed ExPat Shield became my default and I was unable to override this except by uninstalling ExPat Shield.  By the way, I did uncheck the option box for their search engine. Any suggestions?  Also, do you know of any way to access other iPlayers such as ITV and Channel 4?

  • I just re-installed the ex-pat programme and unchecked a bunch more option boxes.  I am now able to watch BBC iPlayer AND still access my Google home page.  So thanks, Knghtrider, for the input.

  • @Tanemera,
when using Ex pat, connect/on, then close your browser.(Top right red X, for other readers) Ex pat remains active........ .then open your usual homepage as normal, works fine!

ITV iplayer can be viewed but a good broadband speed is better as it is prone to freezing , but you can download and save programmes/episodes to watch later if you find it too annoying. It really does depend on your broadband speed !

I can't get Channel 4 iplayer, it recognises my Spanish I.P. address and prevents access.

    @Davymar,
BBC News, Alba & Parliament were removed from the EPG,
i am led to believe that when they are switched off from the transponder, they will be replaced by the red button streams. but only 5 out of the existing 7 streams.
however, all things will most likely change when the new Astra 1N satellite reaches position later this month or in November, it has a different footprint than Astra 2A, 2B & 2D but has only been booked by ITV at the moment. You can track its progress here,  http://www.n2yo.com/?s=37775

  • Hi Knightrider, OK on the ExPat thing now, thanks.  ITV Player won't let me watch anything.  It tries to download but comes up with a message saying that programme is not available.  I have the latest Flash Player installed and have tried ITV Live as well as previous programmes.  Any ideas?

  • I tried as you suggest, Knightrider, but I still get the message "sorry this video is not available" on all programmes. Maybe it's something to do with my ISP which is BT, via UK Telecom.

  • My ISP is Movistar but the only way i can get the message ''Sorry, this video is only available to be viewed within the United Kingdom'' is when the Expat is turned off. When it is turned on,the programmes are available. But they do take a while to load.
So perhaps there is an issue with your ISP or server. However you can still get all the channels & sports at
    http://myiplayer.com/home.php
(Scroll channels with the blue arrows at the foot of the screen) Some of these are available without the
Expat program running, but again quality does depend on connection speed!

    I hope this helps.

  • Ok, thanks, Knightrider.  I somehow got the impression that you were saying ITV iPlayer worked without the ExPat Shield on.  So now I can make it all work.  However the adverts are a bit of a nuisance and I have been trying FilmOn.com, which is a subscription channel providing all the UK progs at ?14.95 per month (for the HDi version) without additional advertising.  The HDi version also provides a recording facility but, of couse, doesn't allow access to the iPlayers.  Seems to work well so far on 2.5 MBPS.
