  • Hello, not sure if this is an appropriate forum but posted about accomodation on Moneysaving expert about a nice area to stay in Tenerife
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/printthread.php?t=4373313

Los Gigantes was recommended  as you will see as a pleasant place to stay, we are going to have a car and would like to see as much of the island as possible.
"@moneylover - Why not join the forum on www.losgigantes.com and ask your question about car hire and accomodation ? Many people who live in Los Gigantes are full-time residents and know chapter and verse about Tenerife - I'm sure someone will steer you in the right place. It's run by the lovely Dolly Diver."

Havent managed to buy a book yet on Tenerife but if Los G is convenient for a lot of the island then it sounds a good place to stay.  At short notice we have decided to come to the island 26- 29 January, we were lucky to get v early morning flight and late one back so we do have 4 days.  Anyway, am looking for accommodation, an appt, that has 2 bedrooms to sleep 3 adults for 3 nights.  Not looking for the chicest place in village just something clean, pleasant ,comfortable  and good value with parking nearby.  Are there any appartments anyone can suggest, please?
    Many thanks
    Hilary

Also is there one particular car firm to suggest, or are they all much of a muchness at the airport?

    Many thanks

  • I can highly recommend El Sombrero apartments, they are well run and spotlessly clean, they also do car hire although I don't know if that would suit you when you need to get from the airport to LG.  If you check out their website you'll find out about availability. I know they have two bedroom apartments and they're in a great location.  We're returning 11th January and can't wait. Good luck.

  • A little late to book a nice Apt. but good luck, and agree with the previous post.
I always use Autoreisen car hire at the airport you can book on line nearly always the cheapest
I have hired cars from them for as little as 10Euros a day all fees inc. although this was for
a 4 week hire with the return to TFS

  • Unfortunately you have left it very late! Sombrero or Marinero are ok, marinero can be cool because they do not get the sun, Sombrero get the sun. The problem you have is the fact that most owners ate letting illegaly, the Canarian government have made a pigs ears of things (nothing new for governments the world over is it?) what has happened is that most owners of accommodation have removed them from websites so that the nasty taxman and Canarian courts dont catch them! They still let of course, ie, lots of repeat bookings, but below the threshhold, undetected, if you are not in the know, you are ferked!
We return for six weeks shortly, we have had no problem booking at all, unfortunately the Canarians are killing the goose that laid the golden eggs, simply because they are stupid, and they can!

  • Yes, El Sombrero is excellent and near the centre of town.

    http://www.apartmentslosgigantes.com/index.php?lang=en

If you are up to driving from the airport, Autoreisen generally have the best deals and you can sign up in the arrivals area while you wait for your bags.  From about 108 euros per week, including insurance.

    Otherwise Sombrero do car hire.

Have a great time - you have chosen the best address in Tenerife!

  • have booked our car with Autoreisen and am pleased as that seems to be the car hire lots of people recommend.  So thank you for that
Sombrero full up.  Any other suggestions gratefully received.  We are not going to be fussy at this stage.
    Thanks again

  • Why don't you try going onto the owners website for a private rental then, if you just look up 'private rentals is los gigantes' that should do it.

  • Pity about Sombrero.

You could try Diamond Aaprtments.  They are newly rebuilt and nice, but some terrible reviews.

Or, Tamaimo Tropical, 10 minute walk from Los G.

    http://www.hotelesglobales.com/en/hotel-tamaimo-tropical-puerto-santiago-tenerife.html

Or, Apatmentos Poblado Marinero, beside the harbour.

    http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187479-d531559-Reviews-Apartamentos_Poblado_Marinero-Tenerife_Canary_Islands.html

Or, Apartmentos Los Dragos, a 15 minute walk from Los G.

    http://www.hoteles-losdragos.com/english/general-information/los-dragos-del-sur.html

I think I would rate them in this order - Tamaimo, Los Dragos, Poblado Marinero, Apatmentos Diamond.  Sombrero definitely first choice though.

  • OK, everyone has an opinion.  I have never stayed in Tamaimo but have heard good reports and the pool looks nice.  Is there something I don't know?  Maybe noisy?  I have looked round Diamond since it was re-built and must say it was all very clean and new, if a bit "clinical".  However I have seen some bad reports about people being re-directed to other resorts and the Reception staff not being too pleasant.  Drago is basic but cheap.  It all comes back to Sombrero being the best "legal" let in the area (in my humble opinion!).

  • On our last visit in june we stayed at the barcelo santiago ,then the diamond apts.Agreed they looked a bit clinical at first ,but for price, location, view, cleanliness they win hands down. The apts are modern and the owner could not do enough for everyone. We had 4 appts in our group they were all spotless.I too see the report on trip advisor ,I found the owner and his son to be charming if a bit eccentric. They seem to have a problem every christmas. We have also stayed in the T.T. its O.K.but full of the A.I.brigade and the areas full of restuarant touts in the evening.Last year we also stayed on the tamara complex, booked with a company called T.H.A. ,they manage a lot of appts ,worth giving them a call, very good website.

  • I have seen some of THA's apartments and they have been excellent.  I wonder how they get round the legal situation on short term rentals.  To the best of my knowledge, not all of the apartments they advertise are on approved complexes.

    Definitely worth a try, though.

  • as someone previously pointed out, the best apartments have had to go 'underground', they are still busy with people in the know but unfair spanish ruling prevails.

  • unfortunately they are not that many apartments in the area that are available for short term lets and many owners  who do let book a year in advance (usually to previous customers who return year after year over the winter period).
I suggest you also search apartments in Puerto Santiago and Playa de la Arena  too (some of the places mentioned in previous posts are in PS & PLA), the 3 resorts run into each other.

Parking unfortunately is very difficult, particular in Los Gigantes - although only slightly better is PS & PDA, so as you have hired a car it would be a good idea to try and rent somewhere with parking if possible.  If you don't manage to find an apartment there are several hotels in the area, we need extra space over part of our winter stay and I found something suitable on booking.com (although I booked about 6 months ago)

Good luck, I hope you fine something suitable
