Air Freight or Shipping?

  • Would anybody know the cheapest way to have stuff sent over to Tenerife from the UK.  We don't have any furniture to send over but lots of boxes of personal items and a computer and a few kitchen appliances.

  • I had a similar requirement recently and tried several shipping companies, both Tenerife and the UK based.  The costs were horendous and I found it cheaper to pay for an extra suitcase on the flight over.  Not much good if you want to ship a fridge though, so probably cheaper to buy a new one here.  I think the Post Office have the best rates for parcel post for small items, better than DHL, etc.  I got a quote from one shipping company to ship a new 3-piece lounge suite out here and it was going to cost more to ship than the suite cost!

I will be interested to hear if anyone else has any ideas.

  • We shipped a load of things out from Manchester to Tenerife a couple of years ago. The cost wasn't too bad, but the paperwork and red tape were unbelievable.  By the time we'd found someone to act as our 'import agent' to fill inthe necessary forms etc and then met the wretched parcels/boxes at Tenerife airport (three trips before they were finally ready for us) we wished we'd sold up the items in England and bought in Tenerife. My advice - think long and hard and unless your possessions are of sentimental value don't do it.

  • We shipped over (you don't need to hire container) price was very reasonable, we had no probs at all, door to door. We just contacted a removal firm in our local area and they did the rest, we didn't take out any insurance and had no import probs, we couldn't believe the speed, they rang us when they were on route in Tenerife - maybe we were lucky !
