A few questions please

  • My wife and I are coming to Los Gigantes for a week, at the end of October. I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to answer a few questions for me please:
    1.   Is there a shop in LG where I can buy a nice malt whiskey, is it cheaper than duty free, or should I buy one in the airport at Manchester?
    2.   I am interested in photography, are there any reputable camera shops than anyone knows of please.
    3.   I won?t be hiring a car, I drive a lot with work, and like to have a break on holiday, are there any reasonable trips ? coach or boat that go from LG, and if so were can they be booked ? holiday reps are always expensive I think.
    4.   Are there any decent Spanish restaurants that are in LG or walk able from LG please?
I would be very grateful for any help. Thanks

  • Hi Joel,

Just a quick response from me but I expect all of your questions will be answered by many.

There are a number of very disreputable camera shops in the whole resort area - Los Gigantes to Playa Arena. My personal view would be to steer well clear of them. If you are using a digital SLR just bring sufficient memory cards and your charger to tide you over. Some of the bargains available are not quite what they seem.

There are a few agencies locally offering mini-bus trips, walking trips and boat trips so there things to do without a car.

Restaurants ? always a divisive issue on this board ! I would suggest you have a trawl through some of the old posts and reviews and then make your own mind up where you want to go and where you want to spend your money.

    Enjoy your trip !

  • Hi JoeL, Have a look at Borris & Dorris' Good Food Guide - you'll get lots of recommendations from there.  Living and working in Tenerife, I don't go out to eat as much as I'd like - I do like El Meson (more Canarian) and El Pescador, both always have a warm welcome and good food.  If you fancy a nice easy lunch, come and see me at TJ's Bar - next to the Hotel Los Gigantes - famous for it's fabulous toasties and plough persons lunches!  Joanne Love

The plaza at peurto de satiago is good, bar dorta for tapas ,bar rios for good cheap cusine and arepas. El meson great for meat.In LG itself bar jessis is good for fish,Tipsy terrace does great lunches and good coffee.
There are a few boat trips etc from the harbour

  • my best advice is ,

boat trips.... go to the harbour and see whos doing what, the yellow whale express boats are good.

restaurants..... panchos in playa del arena, juan carlos in los gigantes, barco del nino in santiago.

camera ...... not sure, but you will get superb pictures as we are in a very picturesque area.

    whisky..... buy locally!

  • 'Direct Excursions'...just up from the Los Gigantes Hotel, do some good trips. can personally recommend the one to La Gomera...early start but worth every penny.

Agree with warnings about purchase of electrical goods.

Good value restaurants....the menu of the day at El Barco de Nino is good value and the atmosphere is lovely (10.80? and behind Netto) and San Francisco (8.10?, opposite Netto) both over the cliff path from LG into Puerto Santiago.

The shore walk from Puerto Santiago is lovely and you will discover lots of restaurants en route.

    Have a lovely holiday.

  • Agree with BL, the trip to La Gomera, cost about 45 euros in March, but a day trip, everything included, coach, ferry, lunch. Lots of stops for photos. An excellent day out.  Another day trip is to Loro Park, actually worth hiring a car for the day, setting out early , say 7am to get there for opening, all the animals are fed at this time, and are fresh for the day. It also meand you see everything at the cooler part of the day, and can be leaving as it gets really busy!!

  • Regarding the Cameras - if you have a hire car or know the buses.

There are large reputable outlets on the Island - sealed boxes and proper
receipts to get a decent one.
