Canarian TV - in UK!

  • Lacking my usual fix of Tenerife from the El Marques Palace webcam, I went in search of some other cameras. Whilst doing so I found a website that shows how to get 'foreign' satellite television stations in the UK. Browsing the listings I noticed TV CANARIAS and with a bit of dish re-alignment and some programming of the sky digibox found that I can get a really good picture. Some of the programming is a bit dire, but a lot of it is excellent including helicopter views around the islands coastlines and programmes about cooking Canarian dishes (goat seems to be a popular item) also an interesting programme about a family who make fireworks used for the fiestas. There is also a sort of folk club featuring traditional instruments and traditional songs, some of which sound quite bawdy!
If anyone is interested, I could try to simplify the instructions for getting the station, although be aware if you only have the one sky dish you lose all of your usual channels. It wasnt a problem for me as I pcked up a spare dish at a car boot sale and now have one pointed at the usual satellite and another pointed at my Canarian one.

  • Sebastian !  Shouting again !!!  Keep calm, you were far more refined in Brideshead Revisited.

  • Ok, ignoring that annoying interference here are the basics:
In the UK for normal sky digital viewing your dish is pointing 28.2 degrees East. You need to swing your dish to 19.2 degrees East. Using the extra channel programming set the channel to 10979, polarisation to V, and 5/6. Using the signal strength /quality indicator in the signal test area  use VERY  small movements of the dish until it shows a good strength and that is "LOCKED". Exit the setup menu and select extra channels, it should search for listings and bring up at least a dozen channels (including German MTV!) amongst them you should find TV Canarias.
Please dont go climbing ladders and stuff to do this, my dishes are fitted just beneath my bedroom window so I can easily adjust as required. As a matter of fact I can even pick up this satellite with the dish indoors. There are always boxes and dishes available at the car boots over here these days as so many people have gone on to cable and no longer need them. The one I got cost me 2 UK pounds. The cable to connect it up cost 15!
Oh, nearly forgot...no analog signal that I know of Falstaff.

  • ANNOYING INTERFERNCE????? SEB IS MUCH QUICKER ROY!!!!

ALL SOUNDS VERY TECHNICAL BUT I LIKED THE FACT YOU CAN ADJUST THE DISH ANGLE FROM YOUR BEDROOM WINDOW OR EVEN IN THE BEDROOM. BETTER INDOORS RATHER THAN HAVING LOADS OF SATELLITE DISHES KEEPING YOU UP WITH ALL YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGS FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF VACATION DESTINATIONS AND OF COURSE NOT UPSETTING ANY OF YOUR NEIGHBOURS.
HAVE ALSO CHECKED AND IT IS LEGAL TOO!! MIND YOU TYPICAL BRITS MOANING THAT SKY IS SO MUCH CHEAPER HERE THAN IN UK.

  • Well Seb, Sky may be cheaper in the Canaries but it doesnquote t compare with Freeview. Over 20 quality channels all free.

Thanks for the advice Roy. Unfortunately I only have an old analogue decoder. I used to pick up lots of stations pre Astra  on a big dish in the garden from a satellite 21 degrees west.  I canquote t remember itquote s name now.   Never really bothered with Sky.  Freeview is excellent  so the satellite system is never used .  Would take it to a car boot sale but the dish is too big.
