  • In an Italian eatery (run by Spanish) I was charged one euro for cheese to sprinkle over my pasta meal. I couldn't believe it & thought it was a mistake but when I questioned the waitress she said it was standard practice. Only happened to me in this one place though. It can't be good for repeat business or word of mouth referrals so you have to question if it is worth them doing this sort of thing. I never went back!

  • This is a very tricky question as we are damned if we do and damned if we don't!!!

Restaurant prices are for the public so I have no problem with it.  Don't like mustard anyway.

Not tricky at all Dolly as in the recent past when I posted regarding three or four restaurants that I rated, the ones I rated as positive you kept on the post and conveniently deleted the reference to the one restaurant that I had an issue with - you know the one I mean.  That one wasn't tricky was it ???

I find that remark incredulous.  Pray tell me what on earth is the point of having an open forum under the heading "Eating out and Entertainment" when positive posts  seemingly by there very nature remain and negative posts will/may be deleted  merely because someone ( presumably the restaurant/bar owner may feel the post unfair or of detrimental value to his/her business !) - it seems they are happy for a positive post to act as an advertisment but perish the thought if someone has the audacity of suggesting their eating experience at that particular restaurant was shall we say "not up to expectations"

The forum blurb under  "Eating out & Entertainment" states and I quote - "..use this board to talk about your experience with restaurants, bars and entertainment in the LG area" - it should go on to say "although it is highly likely positive posts will remain and negative posts will be deleted cos they might offend"

The best thing I can say bearing in mind the heading under which I write is "Utter tripe" !

  • I always thought that the Eating Out and Entertainment section existed to benefit tourists and locals to decide which places to try for good food and entertainment. It now transpires that it doesn't serve that purpose as negative comments are deleted about establishments run by people Dolly knows.

So what exactly is the point of this section.

I regularly use websites such as Trip Advisor when deciding where to go on holiday because it's reliable information posted by users. Trip advisor would not survive it was unable to separate out the good from the bad and ugly. They don't censor bad reviews made in good faith because tourists (their customers) wouldn't use their website.

By censoring bad reviews, this website does a disservice to the good establishments and the bad ones too. Owners should be listening to the bad comments and making changes to put them right.

  • I was under the misapprehension that free speech was permitted in Spain but it appears that the publication of adverse comments on the quality of food at named establishments results in the issuing of a denuncia.

Perhaps someone would kindly explain to an ignoramus like me what a denuncia is and what consequences follow from the issuing of one, please.

I assume you are referring to the post from our fearless administrator in post 11 above where she mentions a denuncia which is roughly the Canarian equivalent to someone issuing a summons in the UK. The owners of a message board such as this are liable in law for any libellous comments made by contributors where libellous means a written statement containing untruths that could or does defame the character or reputation of the person(s) or buisiness(es) named in said statement.

I have yet to see anything that could be considered libellous in this thread (including of course the post(s) that have been removed), so don't be fooled by post number 11, actually what she really means is what she said in post no 6. It's all part of the village mentality here, after all, some of the restaurants that deserve criticism might just advertise on this site, and we wouldn't want to upset them now would we. ::) ::)

No point in getting upset, nothing will change

  • A recent post was removed by the admin recently, as it was insulting to someone, nothing to do with the service at the restaurant, quality of food, or charges. Condeming bad business is one thing, derogatory remarks about an individual are a different matter.

  • A denuncia is not as strong as a "summons" as the UK would understand it to be, it is more of a complaint which is recorded at the local police station along with hundreds of 000's a year.....

An open forum should be just that, open for people to use as they feel fit, not a place for our mates to post nice things about other mates, which unfortunately has been the case here for many years.  The upshot being a handful of posts per week as opposed to the hundreds a day on other Tenerife based fora.

There is an aninimity on forums which allows for freedom of speech, even if the forum owner were eventually taken to court which is most unlikely, the internet itself has aninimity behind it and there are plenty of rules to protect board owners from responsibility for what is posted - within the understanding of the rules of decency and taste.

Of course, if someone does post about the quality of food in a restaurant that might come under taste?????? !!!!!!!!!.

Well - please excuse the pun - but that comment sure doesn't cut the mustard with me !!

Have to agree with that statement - I would have said it myself but thought it likely I would have had the remark "deleted"

  • I have to agree that this forum is quite unusual in that no criticism appears to be allowed of establishments. We have just returned from our first visit to Los Gigantes, fortunately before the volcano and happily with no norovirus.  We usually go elsewhere in Spain and there is a great forum for that region and restaurants etc are criticised fairly and constructively all the time. As as has been said before, isn't that the point of forums like this to help people, like us, visiting a place for the first time?

I found this forum and other forums very useful giving information about the bono ticket for example and also (not sure if it was this forum or another) advising of the Transito supermarket delivering your shopping for free so you can avoid paying the extortionate prices charged by the other supermarkets in the town.  I also read a lot about bars and restaurants which we found helpful.  As I have said previously, many places were quite empty over the Easter period so every restaurant needs to be sure it is operating at its best in difficult times like now.  They should be prepared to accept any criticism and act on it if necessary.

  • We had quite good food in Los Gigantes, apart from Tipsy terrace (over priced) The worst by far for value and service was Little Italy, cheap cuts of meat that the chef did not know how to tenderise, appalling service, the starter arrived After the main course! I refused to pay for it, after an argument with the manager they finally accepted they were wrong, one to avoid in the future for me.
Two bad apples do not spoil the rest thankfully.
What happened to the one at the back of the church, Sinatras? has it closed?

Davymar - yes, Sinatras (as was) has long closed.  Interesting about your experience at Tipsy as if you look at my post 12/04/10 my part of that post referred to Tipsy and was promptly deleted - I merely made the point that the food whilst ok did not represent good value for money nor was it generous in portion.  You might have to see the headmaster after school on this one !!

I haven't been in Little Italy on my last two visits to LG, have had some nice meals in there although my last was somewhat poor, suppose I may have gone in on a busy day or understaffed will certainly eat there again though - it always seems well supported, so most diners presumably are satisfied.

Ah the Toucan, I wonder if it is the same one as I remember from years ago? we used to stay at Tamara and could hear it making its funny whistle.
We dont live in the uk, we are used to eating out after 8.30 pm,at a lot of places we were the last couple left as everyone seemed to go at 10pm, I think one evening down by the harbour it looked like everyone had took a day off, it was deserted!
