Special birthday meal

  • Hi everyone

It's going to be my birthday while I'm holidaying in Los Gigantes on 6th August (21 again!!!).  I was wondering if anyone could recommend a really nice restaurant for me to make my hubbie pay for a special birthday dinner for me.  Preferably in Los Gigantes, but we do have a car so don't mind going a bit further afield.

We have an 11 year old son who will be coming with us, so would need to be a restaurant that allows children.  He is very much restaurant broken and has developed a love of eating out at good restaurants with us - he's always very well behaved!

All suggestions will be very gratefully received.

    Thank you!

  • you have one of the best restaurants on your doorstep. el rincon de juan carlos behind the church square. google it, there is a website.

there is a nice one in alcala too, overlooking the harbour, but, i cant remember its name.  it has great seaviews, nice bar, and it sells candles etc, anyone know its name?

  • Thanks for replies so far all.

Janey, thanks for reminding me about the restaurant on the Church Sq, I'd forgotten about that - we've never tried it but have always thought it looked really nicely set up and a bit special.  That might be a good option for us, we do have the car, but it'd be better if my hubbie could share a bottle of wine (or 2!!) with me.  I'm off to Google it now!

  • Rste Juan Carlos is good, but for food coupled with views and on Saturdays usually some light music why not try La Pergola - in Mar Blanco adjacent to Barcelo Hotel Puerto de Santiago.  Parking very difficult unless you prebook car park, but taxis are inexpensive so your husband can still enoy his wine. View to die for - what could be better than a meal overlooking the Atlantic whilst the sun goes down.  Web site is www.lapergola.es  Regarding your son, Spanish restaurants welcome young people - not like so many places in the UK.  Enjoy wherever you go.

you get what you pay for!!!  and, it is a special occasion.  and, la pergola isnt doing much wrong - it is always so busy!
i think it is nearly as good as el rincon de juan carlos!

did anyone find a web site for el rincon de juan carlos?

I found the website, but unfortunately it just showed a picture of the restaurant, couldn't find the menu. But I did find a website that gave it rave reviews by people who had eaten there.  I also looked at the Pergola website, looks like it has beautiful views (if you can get a table with the view!) - but the rest of their site was under construction so I couldn't see the menu etc.

As hubbie is paying (hee hee), I don't mind it being on the expensive side and think either of these would be fantastic for a celebration meal.  Shall pay them both a visit when we get there and check out the menus.

Thanks again to all for your suggestions. xxx

  • two more worth considering don't know the names but:-

First is between the Fisherwomens Roundabout and Caladonia Park on the left ( Estero  ?), and

Second the restaurante in the old manor house that has been renovated to an hotel and restaruante complex in Santaigo del Teide, good food in very nice setting. A bit out of the way but worth a visit especially in the lighter summer evenings to have a look at the entire comlex.

But it's all a matter of personal taste

  • My choice without a doubt would be La Pagola, and it's NOT expensive, infact he drinks are cheaper than the coffee place next door !! Views to die for, especially if you book around 7.30 and watch the sunset. If it is very busy service maybe a bit slow as they cook fresh to order, but you can just relax and enjoy the view. Taxis from LosGigs would be a few euros, there are probably other places just as good but not right on the doorstep, I live here and this is the only place I would go for a special meal, they have also just updated and changed their menu. El Rincon in LG is good but doesn't have the views and ambience and the last time I looked the menu hadn't been changed in ages.

  • La Pergola is sounding like my favourite at the moment - I am a complete sucker for fantastic views and let's face it the views from LG and surrounding areas are without doubt some of the best in the world - especially when there's a sunset involved.

My birthday is half way through my holiday, so I'll pay them a visit as soon as I arrive and get a table booked for 7.30 on my birthday night (which is a Thursday, so hopefully not as busy as weekends?).  Any idea if they'd let me see which table they've booked for me? - just so I can make sure I can see that fab view - it'll be my best birthday pressie ever!

  • I'm sure they will reserve you whichever table you fancy - shame you are not going on a saturday though as they have a live pianist - perhaps you should move your birthday back a bit - a lady's preogative !!

  • I think I can wait to celebrate until Saturday - a live pianist, fantastic views and excellent food sounds like a birthday to remember to me and worth the wait.  Plus we have friends joining us on holiday on the Friday, so might work out perfectly - more the merrier.  Added bonus is that my friend is tee total - so we have a driver!

Thank you all for your messages and suggestions - I'll post a review of our thoughts on the restaurant when I get back.

  • you would need to book la pergola caroline especially for a saturday evening. and just ask for an front line table, he'll know what you mean. dont leave it too near to the day as he will be full.

  • Thanks very much for the advice Janey. I plan to book up shortly after we arrive on the 30th July. So should hopefully be ok - if they're full I'll go for my birthday day (5th, Thursday, which might be a bit quieter than the weekend).  Will definitely be asking for a front line table as I'm guessing those are the ones with the amazing views.  Cheers for that tip!  xx
