  • Coming over in April and was wondering if all the restaurants in Los Gigantes area will be open as when over last July (beginning) this was not the case.

  • Summer here in Los Gigantes is the quieter season and most restaurants close for a holiday sometime between July - end Aug.  In April you should find everything open.

Check out Borris and Dorris good food guide of the area.  Direct link

  • You must try Juan Lamas in Playa Arena (near Playa Arena Hotel and opposite Perfumeria). We have lived in San Juan for 4 years and visit this restaurant very regularly!!  Excellent food, lovely hosts Henrick and Carine (lovely waitress Anika), 3 course special ?11.50, menu changes daily.  All home cooked food by Henrick. Bookings are a must as this restaurant has become very popular especially with the English.  Certainly be open in April.

  • Been 3 times it was very good - wouldn't go as far as saying it was excellent - however went last week with friends (after we'd raved about it to them) and it was very very average, in fact our friends were very disappointed - mind you I do think serving hash browns with some of the dishes a bit strange - I think they are more of a breakfast thing and then trying to  pass them off as a potato rosti - not quite the same. The family are lovely and the service very good, HOWEVER the food has to be consistent. It has now actually put me off from recommending the place now, which is a shame.

  • Were they really hash browns passed off as potato rosti or was that your interpreation?  I still think it is worth a try.  I would say we have been 13 times (not 3) and have never had a bad meal, would still say the food was excellent.

  • Hi tlc

Went to Juan Lamas last night with new acquaintances, who are visitors to Tenerife.  We recommended the restaurant to them and this is their second visit within one week and they could not praise the restaurant food highly enough. The 'acquaintance' is a retired domestic science teacher from Cornwall so has good knowledge of cooking.  We all had the 3 course meal last night and it was excellent and we had difficulty in making a reservation as they were so busy.

  • Okey dokey will let you know next time I go.

Now you can help me  please !! We are meeting friends in Playa San Juan sometime in the next 2 weeks - none of us have had evening meal there before, only been for daytime snacks - where would you recommend, also is there anywhere pleasant for pre-dinner drinks.

  • Hi tlc

There is a relatively new bar/restaurant on the front (beach end of the village) called Ajibe (most people refer to it as the Silver bar). They have blackboard menu (typically Canarian) and you can eat inside or out (open 8am - midnight). House wine is very good, normally well known make i.e. Vina Norte and reasonably priced.

Pennys Bar (Penny and Phil) for pre dinner drinks (close around 8pm).  They are other end of San Juan on the front. Very small bar very comfortable and homely - lots of English people. They do lunchtime snacks which are very good. Happy Hour I believe 5pm-8pm.

Taverna on the front (overlooking the harbour and new beach) is good for pre dinner drinks. They do food but not much room inside to eat or drink. They have 2 other restaurants, (either side) the Marsala which specialises in meats (being vegetarian myself never eaten there) and the Marlin specialising in fish  - I hear very good but VERY expensive. A lot of their customers come from the Abama, so speaks for itself.

Excellent Chinese restaurant on the front, persistent good food and reasonably priced.

Be interested to know how you get on.

I am not in competition with Borris and Dorris.

  • Have to say was pretty disappointed with the amount of places closed until mid June, walking from Santiago along to Arena was pretty much like  ghost town and my fave wee coffee place down at the marina in LG also closed ... :(
I know folks have to have a break, thats my gripe over.... ::)
