Gluten Free Dining in Los Gigantes

  • We are visiting in December and two of our party are Coeliacs and must, therefore, have a strictly Gluten Free diet.  Does anyone know of restaurants etc who can cater for this please?

  • Sorry, but as in the UK, most restaurants cater for the 99% normal people. Sorry to hear your party have problems, but you really cannot expect restaurants to accomodate a very small % of people with food issues. Where would you draw the line?

Things are bad in Tenerife at the moment, and I cannot see any establishment  making seperate menus for veggies/coeliacs/IBS sufferers etc.

  • Amunette sorry to disagree with you but most restaurants are willing to try to assist anyone with allegies as long as this is made clear when booking.
We went to tajinaste to watch the band yesterday and I asked the owner who said a gluten free diet is easily catered for with only a little notice.
I hope this information helps you clarebear and you and your friends enjoy your holiday in Los Gigantes. I believe you will find the phone number for Tajinaste
on this site if you contact them I am sure they will be able to assist you.

  • Surely most restaurants will cook anything plain and as long as you have no wheat products as clucky points out most should cater for your problems just dont go to "little italy" they would think you a problem and charge for bread even if you didn't have any.
As for amuanut when will you draw the line?????????????

But what happens if you want to eat in a REAL Canarian restaurant?!!!! No thriving business can provide menus  to cater for all tastes/health issues. FACT. Being a veggie requires more than being offered a baked potato  with cheese or nut cutlet!! It is a serious issue if you have a problem, and I do not feel most restaurants can offer such a service and stay finacially viable. No criticism intended to Tajinaste or any restaurant.

  • If they can?t  provide for everyone?s tastes or health issues as you put it. I doubt if a restaurant is a thriving business in the first place, and just for your information, gluten free diet is not a veggie diet, they cannot eat wheat products

  • For Clarebear

I?ve only had a chance to speak with Glynis at Tajinaste.  Her comment was that as long as she gets a bit of notice she is quite prepared to adjust her menu to suit individual needs.

When you get here either telephone or call in to a few restaurants and ask the question.  You can get a few telephone numbers from the Borris and Dorris page.

Do let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Clarebear

As someone who suffers with a wheat allergy, and lives permanently in Tenerife, I can assure you that I have had no problems with food in any of the restaurants that I have used.

Most canarian chefs will make sauces with just cream and seasonings and not add any flour.  I know a few people that holiday here and they also have no problems.  If you talk to the staff and explain your situation they are very obliging.  If you want any further information please email me and I will be more than happy to help advise you.
