Family Holiday

  • Hi

We are staying at Las Rosas Resort, which I am told is 10 minute walk from Los Gigantes.  We are a family of 4: 2 adults and two boys aged 6 & 3.  We will not be hiring a car and plan to use a taxis to get to and from the airport.

I would like some advice on where we can go with the children for entertainment, by this I mean day trips and for evenings out.  Looking at the Association of Taxi Drivers of Santiago del Teide website there are a number of excursions available; do know if any of these are available via bus?  Are there pubs that allowed children in?

I would also like suggestions where we can go for something to eat. We would like to give the children more than just something and chips for their meals.  I've seen a number of reviews but I'm not sure if these places allow children or not.  We are self catering but, as I have been reminded, it is a holiday for us all so we would like to go out for breakfast. Looking at the reviews I can see that the Friendly Dolphin and Ocean Drive do a nice breakfast: are they far from Las Rosas?

And finally, I hope you can also suggest somewhere that will show football on sky sports. My six year old son would love to watch a game or two so I suppose he'll drag me along as well!  So any suggestions that are close to Las Rosas, have a big screen and allow children would be good!

    Thanks

  • If you search this site you will get loads of information on restaurants etc. I don't know of any restaurant that doesn't allow children, but obviously some are more laid back than others. Ref days out...just up the road from where you are staying is the post office...correos...from here you can get to Los Cristianos and Las Americas on the 477 and 473. You need a Bono ticket for ease...12? from the shop opposite. On the other side of the road the 325 will take you to Puerto Cruz. There are bars in Los Gigantes and Playa La Arena and Puerto Santiago that all show the matches...etc. You can have a wonderful time even on a budget - taxis can be quite expensive but for a family of 4 they may work out competitive for a day trip....look at losgigantestaxis...they do some good days out. Have a lovely holiday.

  • Have you considered carhire...could be good value when you set it against the taxi cost to and from the airport. Rentacarsantigo are very good and very competitive...see the ad on the home page of losgigantes.com.....they will deliver to the airport, give an all inclusive price and speak English.

  • There are many cafes/restaurants nearby that do lots of things other than chips. If you see things on the menu that are not inc in the childrens portions just ask and they will give you a small portion. My sister came with her 5 year old and all of the restaurants were happy to serve smaller portions from the main menu. At the Wine Bar/Harbour Club (on the way into Los Gigantes as you walk in - you can't miss it) I'm sure they have an ad saying kids eat for free and they also have entertainment some nights for the kids, maybe someone will confirm. I would recommend Tops Tours (on the marina) for the whale and dolphin trip, 15 euros per adult, 10 for kids - 2 hour trip, which is sometimes long enough for kids. Or the 'pirate' type galleon which kids always love, these are all available to book as you walk down to the marina, about 10-15mins from Las Rosas. I'm sure you will have great time and will find you more when you are here just by word of mouth.

  •  :)hi masa
me and my good lady have been coming to los gigs for many years now , and as we are also footy fans we like to watch a game now and then , the place that we prefer by miles is sports bar torreon, it is quite near to rosas, head downhill for barcello santiago hotel and right opposite on the first floor you will find the bar. it is run by a local family , Tino, wife  Lulu, and daughter Lucy. we have used the bar for a number of years now and the hospitality of tino and his family is superb, there will be at least three games for you to watch , and if you want something to eat the the food is excellent , from burgers to chicken and steaks etc , if you do use the bar please say hello to Tino and family for me. Davy and Jean from N/Yorks (Boro supporters yeh I know someones got to support them etc etc etc w"eve heard em all before)  We will be back out end of january early february and we will certainly be in torreon for footy food and a beer (or two) . I"m sure you will have a wonderful holiday

  • Hi
    Thanks for the feedback!
Having never driven abroad before I have decided to stick with taxis and buses.
Looking at the comments I think we'll be going to:
Wine Bar/Harbour Club, Fettuccine Inn, El Timon, Friendly Dolphin and Ocean Drive.
For the football we'll be going to Tino's Sport Bar Torreon, and yes Davy we'll say hello to Tino for you.  Unlucky with the result tonight!
I'm sure we'll be going on a whale and dolphin and trip.
Sorry couple more questions! Will there be people try to sell timeshares on the streets?  How far apart are Los Gigantes and Playa La Arena and Puerto Santiago?
    Thanks

  • Its not necessary to travel away from the area all the time. There is the Oasis in LG which is great. Crazy golf in LG. Down at Puerto Santiago is the Plaza which has a huge area which often has things going on especially for children. Arena beach is a blue flag beach with great facilities.  Around the LG/PS area are little playgrounds with swings etc.  All within easy walking distance.  Have a great time.

Timeshare touts are banned in Santiago del Teide (Los Gigantes)
If you are approached by people selling timeshare please report it to the Policia Local.
Good cheap bus/taxi service between Los G and Playa Arena.
Have a very nice holiday in our area.

  • When will you realize that without time share this little rock in the sun would have still been a little rock in the sun.
Timeshare give thousands of people jobs and as before the fact that the marketeers feed on brits greed for free flights cheap duty free package always said that a apckage holiday is the same as a timeshare the only real difference that their apatments are usually of a higher standard if it is gold crown. So dont knock something that works for millions of people worldwide and grow up from that stick in the mud attitude ELVPRES. The fact that the womans family are staying in a timeshare resort should make your comments less as there must be 50 locals working there?????

  • please ignore sebastian.  he rarely visits the site and when he does it is to cause trouble.  he will now answer this message with something quite rude, so as to show his true colours.

the guy (masa) simply asked if he would be badgered by time touts, and the true answer was given.

no, masa, you will not come across any timeshare touts in our area, do enjoy yourselves, you and your family will have a wonderful holiday.  it is a lovely, safe and family orientated resort.  you will meet many nice people i am sure!

  • There used to be timeshare touts in LG, mainly by Green Corner and I was greatly relieved the year they vanished.  I'm on holiday, if I wanted to buy timeshare, I'd go looking for it.  Being harassed, and yes, they did harass, every day of my holiday was a pain the ass.  I know these people are only doing their jobs but I'm happy they're now doing it somewhere else.  As for places to go, take the boys down to the harbour to feed the fishes, they'll love it, take plenty of bread.  El Meson up in Santiago and not far from you, is very family friendly, in fact Domingo's children are often in there themselves, they served us with the bread last time!  If you want a change from your own pool, the Oasis has a couple of slides that the kids love, you just pay for your sunbeds.  I think one of the best days out on the island is to Loro Park, for absolutely any age.  Hope you have a great time.

  • I agree with Carole take the boys to loro park it?s a great day out,  a bit of a journey to get there about 1 ? hours from los gigs. and if anyone asks you how old your oldest the boy is  tell them five. Children under five get in free, try Scooby?s bar in vigillia park shopping arcade for breakfast it?s a lot closer to you and a place called the f1 bar ?I think? also shows football, its right on your doorstep. Spanish run restaurants will make more of a fuss of the boys then you ? so no problem there ? , and I haven?t seen any timeshare touts in the area for a couple of years

Enjoy your holiday and buy the boys a ice cream on me
EVERYDAY WHEN I WAKE UP, I THANK THE LORD I'M WELSH

  • My point was that she is staying in a timeshare resort????????

Without it at the Rosas El marq and the HC to mention a few in the area then there would be not as many people who return year after year to enjoy the local area and keep no doubt money ringing through your tills and keep the locals employed that was my point.

Paney i would never think of upsetting someone it may be that my views are different from yours and many other locals but the sad fact that i rub people up the wrong way is a fact of life GET ONE

  • Masa, there really isn't anything to it, driving I mean on the "right" side of the road, it actually feels "correct" to drive on that side, don't be scared, it really is okay, probably safer too, taxi drivers seem to drive as fast as they can lol. There is the Oasis near the harbour with some kiddy stuff to do, restaurants are fine with children and so are bars but bear in mind there could be "adult" entertainment which you might not want your kids to hear so check out with other people in the village what the acts are like first before taking them in but most acts are okay for children anyway. Definitely do the Loro Park. At El Marques they do a parrot show once a week which the children love, sorry but I can't remember which night it is on but you could always pop in to the reception and ask.
4 weeks and 3 days to go, can't wait to get there!

  • No one seems to mention Siam Park as a place to visit. I assume it's open because I've seen the reviews on this site. The opening seems to have gone completely unnoticed in UK, haven't seen a mention in press, TV or radio.  I thought it was supposed to be " The " Jewel in the Crown" for the Tenerife Tourist Industry, seems more like a well kept secret.

You are wrong there was a very good article in either the Times or Telegraph about Siam Park. I agree that there could be more but everyone has to take their turn.

But has it been publicised in the tabloids?

With the weakening of the pound  there needs to be  better exposure of Tenerife?s tourist facilities because there is a danger of tourists migrating to other resorts outside of Europe.

Holidays in Egypt, Turkey, the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere are looking more and more attractive these days despite their inferior facilities.

  • Masa - only just seen yr message as have been laid up with old age for a few weeks.  All you have to do is get to Las Rosas - they can tell you the most economical ways from the airport, - and then relax!!  They have all the answers to everything you will ever want to know about this area - and other guests will tell you about restaurants and bars.  Good restaurant on site, too.  Had many a happy family holiday there CHILL
