  • Sebastian on the subject of global warming what is being done about the de-forestation in Brazil, Indonesia and elsewhere. Perhaps that should be addressed first ?
Maybe that could be another topic ?

The marina will need to be re-named Atlantis !!!
Will this mean the bar staff will get webbed feet !
And poor Tonys handbag will float !!! What ever next !!
    Just having a laugh !kiises to all.xxxxxxx :D :D :D

  • The only storms around here are the ones SADBASTARDIAN makes when he comments with his utter TOSH.

I hope for just one storm, so we can all pitch in, rent a boat, tie Sebastian to the mast, and leave it 5 miles off the Harbour !

  • I am down at the marina regularly and work is going on. Serious work. There's cranes, lorries and several workmen, it's all go. Pontoon 4, which was the most damaged, is being replaced now.  They are starting at the far end and working back towards the steps.  The replacements do look good.  I just hope they complete over the summer ready for any storms next winter.

  • I have been told by Chicken legs that they are going to stop parking on the restaurant/bar road so peole will have a view from those establishements -  which would be a vast improvement, but I can't find anyone to substantiate that - not saying that Stevie would tell falsehoods but he could be misinformed.
    Anyone heard anything?

  • That has been a rumour for the 16 years I have lived here.  I believe it is a private road so it is up to the Marina.  Yes, I agree bar customers would get a nicer view, but the bars will have no customers as there will be nowhere for them to park!  I for one rarely go to the marina for a meal or a drink, especially at the weekends as you canquote t get parked.  I regularly need to go there for work and I have learnt at busy times to scrounge a lift or get a taxi.

the bars are probably relying on tourists as customers so they wouldnt be bringing a car.  you say yourself you rarely go to socialise there so why would it be a problem for you dolly diver? sorry if i speak out of term for a non local, but, as someone who would really like to see los gigantes kick ass in tenerife we really need to improve that harbour......  it could be a really buzzy busy place...

  • Lets hope that when the work is done on the Marina and the new people take over the marina office , that things improve , surely they must improve !
The Partido Popular have promised a wally trolley ! you know what I mean...one of those little trains that will run from Los gigs marina through to Mercadona in Playa De Arena !!!
Now that would be a good idea for WHOEVER gets in at the next elections !!!
I think that Idea should be taken up by all !!! Tourists and locals would benefit ! less traffic, park your cars ( hopefully not get a ticket)
The bars , restaurants, shops would benefit !!!
    Its a great idea.
However will a full train get up Cardiac hill ?????

  • I have spoken with several bar owners on the marina this morning. Non of them want parking stopped in front of their bars for the following reasons:-

They agree with you that the people in the immediate vicinity can walk'85. No problem there, but you have to remember that a very high percentage of tourists and locals in the Los Gigantes area are older people who rely on their car or a hire car to get them about because of the steep hill.  The majority of people will not walk, that is a fact of modern day living.  The Wally Trolly!!!  We shouldn't hold our breath.

The spectacular cliffs, and the marina, which make our area a tourist attraction, are advertised in all tourist guides, and tourists do queue up to see them, but what happens?  They come to Los Gigantes, get as far as Tamara restaurant then the security guard directs them back up the hill, because there is no parking, (there will be even less if parking is stopped in front of the bars).  Now the guides are advising people to park at the new restaurant/mirador (canquote t remember its name) at the top of the village above Eva apartments!!

  • i can see where you are coming from with the above reply, but, i dont agree!  firstly, you state that many older tourists rely on their cars..... no, the majority of them dont hire cars. they stay at the hotel los gigantes and rarely step out of it!! secondly, the day trippers that stop at the mirador dont have much choice in the matter if it is a preorganised stop!

BUT if there was a little train running from the mirador, down to los gigantes harbour collecting all the elderley, day trippers, families along the way, straight into the harbour where they can appreciate the view and they could have tapas, meals and drinks on the marina side without choking on car fumes, dodging the cars as they try to do 3 point turns...etc...etc..   wouldnt it be lovely?  and think how busy the bars would be, not just little italy, and, the day trippers would perhaps come back for a week or 2 the following year and spend more money in the bars and restaurants.

i think that a little train is just what is needed!

  • If car parking space is removed at  the Marina, the parking problem will inevitably get worse throughout Los Gigantes. It is a pity that there are so few parking spaces and this must ultimately be the fault of the local council in the past for failing to reserve land for parking.

The photo posted recently by LaCochinillo  illustrating a  development proposal raised some years ago, offers an ideal solution to both the parking problem at the Marina (through reclaimed land) and the need to improve facilities there. I think the local council should  pursue this idea with the Marina Company.

Janey, the  idea that  a tourist train could be used to transport people from the Mirador to the Marina is a good one but a non starter for traffic management and highway engineering reasons.  I think a  cable car or ski lift is a much better idea.  I'll get back to you about the snow problem.

  • Wally Trolly would be a great idea .. if it had somewhere down by the Marina to turn around, and if the local taxi drivers didn't complain it was stealing their business!

  • the local taxi drivers wouldnt be able to go down to the marina anyway!!! and, they could always pop up to the mirador for a fare.... and they would get more business as the resort welcomed all the extra tourism that all these plans would encourage....

    dont be shortsighted now.... ::)

  • The train ( Wally trolley) would be a good idea for everyone ! however YES, there may be a problem with the taxis,,,, but saying that, if people (tourists) are in a rush they can call a taxi ???
if they prefer the slower ride ,,,then take the Wally trolley,
I believe if it happens,, it will go from the Los Gigs marina, up through the village along the main road through pto Santiago, as far as Mercadona supermarket, turn around and come back.
Nice little run,, and a little profit maker for the local council at 3euros a trip.

  • Ghod knows that within the next two years the council land across from the tamara pool down to the lido will be made into a parking area holding up to 400 cars & the beach will be extended as well & the marina terraces for the bars  shops will be extended by 1 meter . The only people allowed to park in the marina will be for deliveries with a 15 minute staying period . The train might come after the work is completed . (FACT )  ;D ;D ;D ;D

  • Ghod is well connected.

The Wally Trolley idea appears to be an election initiative - someonequote s ldblquote big idea, dblquote  which wonquote t have a big impact on the parking problem. The problem is bound to grow and needs a big solution from the council not election gimmicks. I understand that the council is involved in a major consultation exercise about parking and access at  Masca. A similar major  initiative is needed for Los Gigantes.

  • A source close to the Mayor confirms that plans are in an advanced stage for a car park for 200 cars to be built on the piece of land on the left as you approach the marina. If the mayor is re elected the building will go ahead to solve the problems of parking in the area.  The road in front of the bars will be closed to all traffic other than deliveries.

I asked him about the Wally Trolley that is being talked about and his comment was the taxi driver would declare war!
