Advice needed!

  • Hi Everyone,

My fiancee and I are are "fairly" regular visitors to LG, although we have not visited since November 2006... I know, I know... unforgivable.

We are flying out from Blighty on Saturday 12th January for 1 week and will be in LG for my 34th birthday on Friday 18th January.

The reason for my post is I need some advice on a suitable restaurant (and bar) in which to celebrate my impending birthday.  I have eaten at most of the restaurants in and around LG.  We were very dissapointed with Juan Carlos last time and in fact the second time we went we ended up walking away as there was a distinct lack of service (we were sat outside in the courtyard area).

I have attempted unsuccessfully to make a booking at El Patio at Abama.  I have had no reply to my e-mails and have also tried to call a few times, with nobody answering the phone!

We are prepared to take a taxi if required, but we are also prepared to re-visit a place in LG if somewhere is really good at the moment...

I look forward to any help you can give me and hopefully we may see some of you in LG next week!

    Thanks!

    Laurence

  • Lawrence, read El Bolero under the heading Borris and Doris. Sounds absolutely fascinating. Have a Happy Birthday. Wish that I was 34 again. The mind boggles.

  • The Borris and Dorris Good Food link is www.losgigantes.com/board/index.php?board=6.0

Restaurant El Bolero - Piedra Hincada report by Borris and Dorris was just posted this morning -  I'd heard many good compliments about the food and service so after receiving their report I payed them a visit and it is certainly the place for that special birthday celebration.  If it's not on the menu speak to the chef, if it's possible they will prepare it for you.

  • Hi Everybody,

Thanks for the kind birthday wishes and for the prompt and very useful replies...  I had already picked up on the new review from Boris and Doris and thought this place looked interesting.

I think I will give it a go for my birthday.

It seems as though there are a few new places in LG and the surrounding area since I last visited, so I can't wait to get over there now!

Once again, thanks and if anyone can think of any more, please let me know....

  • Laurence - why don't you try Toni's in Alcala - I always make a bee line for it each and every time i'm in LG.  The food is superb, plenty of it (unlike Juan Carlos) and it's very reasonably priced.  Been going for donkeys years and never once had a poor meal.  If it was based in LG it would do a roaring trade
I wanted to be the Cincinnati Kid - but couldn't spell it

  • Am I right in thinking that there are now very few restaurants open in Los Gigantes where you can get a decent evening meal.

I read all :Borris and Dorris : but only two of their reports relate to restaurants in the village itself. Sometimes one would prefer to eat locally and not have to travel for an evening meal even though  the taxis are so reasonable and accessible.

We were great fans of the Wayside Tavern when Pat and Danny owned it . I know that it was changed to a French restaurant about a year ago and wondered what that is like as I have never seen a mention of it on this board.

    Also any other suggestions anybody of your favourite village restaurants { apart from Juan Carlos }

  • Thanks again to everybody for the further advice.  Annie, I agree with you.  It appears that the LG restaurants have become a bit "samey" and you now need to look furtherafield for that "special" meal...

I hope I am wrong... While it is nice to travel out of LG once or twice, it is much more preferable to stay in the village for the evening...  I'm sure the old favourites will not fail to please when we arrive!!

    This time next week....!!! ;D

  •  :)Thanks everyone for your recommendations.Due to ill health we have not visited L G since November 2006 and have really missed it . We are coming back for one week on the 22nd Jan and I cant wait.

Will try Jessis as have never been there but I agree that when we last visited we did eat outside of the village quite a lot as we had become dissappointed with most local restaurants even then.

We will try the french restarant I mentioned in my previous post and I will report back on my return.
